Hackers Target Facebook, Amazon, Google and Yahoo Through Domain Registrar Attack
The Syrian Electronic Army (SEA) have managed to change the domain registration information for Facebook.com by accessing the administration panel of a domain registrar MarkMonitor.
According to screenshots posted Thursday on Twitter by SEA,
the hackers gained access to the administration panel of MarkMonitor, which that manages domain names on behalf of large enterprises.
The hackers modified the WHOIS information for facebook.com, changing the domain's contact address to Damscus, Syria. However, they did not modify the domain's DNS (domain name system) settings and point the website to a server under their control, as they did in the past with the domain names of other companies.
SEA's tweets indicate that they also accessed domain registration information of amazon.com, google.com and yahoo.com, through the same MarkMonitor administration panel.
MarkMonitor has not yest provided any comment on the attack.
Facebook also did not comment, but its domain's whois information was quickly corrected following the incident.
