Samsung, LG to Unveil Their Display Technologies at SID 2016

Korean display competitors Samsung Display and LG Display will unveil their latest display products at the 2016 Society for Information Display (SID) conference to be opened in San Francisco on the 24th.

Samsung Display will showcase rollable organic light-emitting diode (OLED) products, virtual reality (VR), vehicle AMOLED displays as well as a hologram technology. The company will exhibit a prototype of the 5.7-inch flexible AMOLED display with a QHD resolution (2560x1440) and the thickness of just 0.3 millimeters. The display weighs only 5 grams. It also has a radius curvature of more than 10R.

In addition, Samsung will provide a glimpse of its digital hologram display technology which "displays" 3D images in the space by using the coherence of lights. The technology can be used in various areas such as 3D popup books, 3D games, VR and AR.

LG Display plans to emphasize in ots Plastic OLD products. The company will display the 77-inch UHD OLED TV panel, which is recognized as the best quality in existence in terms of light and shade, color accuracy and viewing angle, and next-generation products, including the 55-inch double-faced signage and a 65-inch concave OLED display.

It will also exhibit various auto products which are designed for the growing automobile market, such as a 12.3-inch plastic curved OLED display and a 12.3-inch center information display, which supports high resolutions and a brightness of more than 100 nits.

Samsung QLED TV concept

In related news, Samsung Electronics is preparing its roadmap on next-generation TVs and seems that the company will skip OLEDs and go directly to QLEDs.

The company plans to continue the development of its Quantum-Dot TVs, while preparing forthe commercialization of the QLED technologies.

Samsung did not present any new TV concept this year and continues the promotion of SUHD TVs (Quantum-Dot).

On the other hand, LG Electronics is adding pressure to Samsung by promoting its OLED TVs.

Samsung has been developing OLED TVs internally. However, the company cannot cope with OLED problems such as its short age, the burn-in phenomenon and the high production costs.

QLED uses Quantum-Dots with a size of 2 to 10 nanometers and is a self-illuminating element like OLED without needing a Back-Light Unit (BLU). A Quantum-Dot produces different colors depending on its size. Since it uses inorganic materials, it is more durable than OLED, it can be produced with lower costs and offers a superior level of clearness and light stability, making it a great solution for the implementation of HDR (High Dynamic Range) technologies.

It is expected that new QLED TVs will come out in 2019.
