Message Text: Sony Mobile Communications today introduced a new tablet computer in Japan, as the company tries to lure customers from Apple and Samsung.

Available in Japan this spring, the Xperia Tablet Z is 6.9 millimeters thick, weigh 495 grams and has a 10.1-inch "Reality Display" of full-HD display. The waterproof device will be equipped with Sony's "Mobile Bravia Engine 2", will run on Android 4.1 OS, support LTE and will be powered by a quad-core processor running at 1.5GHz.

Other features include an 8.1 mega pixel camera, virtual surround sound and Near Field Communication (NFC) technolofy to connect with compatible devices.

Beyond availability in Japan, Sony isn't revealing any other parts in the world where the product will go on sale, at least for now.

Sony Chief Executive Officer Kazuo Hirai is focusing on mobile devices to revive the company, whose TV unit has been unprofitable for eight straight fiscal years.
