Yahoo has updated its iPhone app to include the technology developed by Summly, a startup the company acquired last month.
The new Yahoo mobile app is smarter, using Summly's natural-language algorithms and machine learning to deliver quick story summaries. Users can turn on the Summly-like synopses by tapping on the icon on the top left of the app and then switching the toggle for "Visual" from "Off" to "On." This will show users headlines and photos for news stories as well as short summaries for some articles. Users can tap on the screen to read the full versions of each story.
By selecting the types of stories they're interested in, users can stay on top of breaking news. Within each article, users can select more of the topics they'd like to see. When they're signed into Yahoo, the choices they make are saved across screens.
The Yahoo app for iPhone and iPod Touch is currently available to users in the U.S.
