Message Text: Fujifilm today announced the GFX 50R, a rangefinder-styled version of the company's GFX 50S medium format camera. The company also unveiling at Photokina 2018 the GFX 100, a 100-megapixel mirrorless shooter.

Compared to the GFX 50S, the new GFX 50R model has a different design, weight and Bluetooth capability. Of course, its price is also lower.

The GFX 50R weighs 145g (5.1oz) more than the 50R yet retains that camera's build quality and weather-sealing. The 3.69M-dot viewfinder is smaller, though its 0.77x magnification is nothing to sneeze at. The LCD uses a conventional tilting mechanism, rather than the 3-axis design on the GFX 50S. The top plate has dials for shutter speed and exposure compensation, and the four-way controller has been removed, with swiping on the screen serving as the replacement.

The 50R continues to use a 51.4MP, 43.8 x 32.9mm medium-format sensor, X-Processor Pro, high resolution FUJINON GF Lens, 3.2" touchscreen LCD and dual SD card slots that support UHS-II media. It uses the same NP-T125 Li-ion battery as the GFX 50S and should last around 400 shots per charge.

The 50R is the first GFX camera to offer Bluetooth connectivity, which maintains a constant connection with a smartphone for auto image transfer and faster pairing.

The Fujifilm GFX 50R will be available in November for $4499.

Insane 100-megapixel medium format camera

The GFX 50R isn't the only new camera Fujifilm is unveiling at Photokina 2018. The company has also introduced the GFX 100, a 100-megapixel medium format mirrorless shooter. Fujifilm says that its GFX 100 will be the world's first medium format and mirrorless camera with a 100-megapixel sensor, and it will have in-body image stabilization and 4K video.

Fujifilm said it hopes to bring the GFX 100 to market in 2019 for around $10,000.

Main features of flagship GFX 100Megapixels Concept model

  • Achieves leading image quality and superior mobility by incorporating the Fujifilm G Format Image Sensor with the world's highest 102 million pixels
  • It is the first medium format mirrorless digital camera in the world to incorporate phase detection pixels throughout the entire sensor (coverage ratio of 100%,) allowing for high-speed/high-precision autofocus wherever in the frame subject is located. This mechanism makes it possible to use autofocus to track moving objects, which was difficult with the traditional system of contrast autofocus, resulting in more precise continuous autofocus and performance capability that exceeds conventional expectations for medium format digital cameras.
  • Fujifilm has developed a new built-in image stabilization system, the first such system in the world to be incorporated into medium format digital cameras. As the new image stabilization works with all varieties of interchangeable lenses, it expands the scope of hand-held ultra-high resolution photography with the 102 million pixel sensor.
  • The combination of the newly developed image sensor with high-speed readout capability and the X-Processor 4 high-speed image processing engine provides a capability for shooting 4K videos (4K 30p 10bit) with a medium format mirrorless digital camera.
  • A medium format sensor, larger than the sensors generally used in high-end cinema cameras, creates greater depth of field for shallow-field subjects, improves reproducibility across a wide range of color tones, and provides superior sensitivity.
  • Although the camera incorporates a large image sensor, it is the same size and weight as a high-end digital single lens reflex camera equipped with a 35mm full size image sensor.
  • It is the first camera in the GFX Series to have a vertically-position grip and an integrated magnesium alloy body, a design which makes the camera robust, while also achieving good holding stability when attaching or removing large interchangeable lenses.
