Future Samsung Smartphone To Have Curved Displays Around Its Edges

Samsung will reportedly release a smartphone with a curved screen that wraps around the sides.

With the screen on the sides, users will be able to see messages at an angle, Bloomberg reported.

The device will go on sale in the second half of 2014, according to unnamed sources in the Bloomberg report.

Samsung has also filed a patent application for a smartphone with a wraparound display with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

"Soft keys," or buttons whose function changes depending on the context, are expected to be located on the screen on both sides, according to the patent.

Samsung's Galaxy Round, its first phone with a curved screen, features a slight left-to-right curve.

Samsung has viewed curved screens as a way to bring innovation back to smartphones. The company has invested in flexible display technology in recent years and has showcased many prototype curved screens.

Corning's Willow Glass, which can be used as with both OLEDs and liquid-crystal displays (LCD) in mobile devices such as smartphones, is thin enough to enable future displays to be wrapped around a device.
