Steam Machine Teardown

Valve has released 300 beta Steam Machine kits into the wild, and iFixit has torn the device appart to provide a look inside the new gaming device.

The Steam machine prototype is actually a mini-ITX PC built inside a customized enclosure. Inside there is a low-profile Zalman cooler and a PCI Express riser, which allows the graphics GeForce GTX 780 graphics card to lie on its side next to the motherboard. A compact SFX power supply is also found on the case:



In order to avoid overheating due to the small distance among the components, a set of plastic frames are available designed to wall off heat-generating components from one another. The basic parts of the device - processor, power supply, and graphics card - get their airflow from vents directly facing their respective fans. The plastic frames protect those parts from heating up adjacent components:
