Qualcomm Said To Prepping 64it, 8-core Mobile Processor

Two Chinese tech sites hint that Qualcomm is reading a mobile processor that could match the specs of Apple A7 and Nvidia Tegra K1 chips.

MyDrivers and PadNews reported that Qualcomm is preparing the 20nm Snapdragon 810, a system-on-chip design with eight 64-bit custom cores with up to 4MB of cache and up to 2.50GHz individual core frequency.

The processor also packs an Adreno 430 graphics core with up to 500MHz clock rate, an LPDDR3/LPDDR4 memory controller and other special-purpose hardware. It is said there will be two versions of the processor, one with integrated baseband capabilities and one without baseband.

The chips are said to be based on the Krait64 core, a 64-bit architecture. Compared to the SoCs based on ARM?s big.LITTLE architecture - such as the 64-bit Cortex-A57 - Krait cores do not support any power saving mode, and are all operating at full speed. But having 8 cores running at 2.5 Ghz would challenge a device's battery life.
