Microsoft Lync Gets New Interoperability With Android, Skype

Microsoft is trying to unifying communications within the enterprise by adding more capabilities to iys Lync software.

Speaking at Microsoft's second annual Lync Conference today in Las Vegas, Microsoft executives described the "universal communications" concept for Lync.

Consistent experience for work and for life. Lync provides a consistent single-client experience for instant messaging, voice, video and meetings, as does Skype. We will bring these experiences even closer over time to make it easier for people to communicate, both at work and in life.

Lync supports Windows Phone, iPhone, iPad, Android, Mac and Windows. THis summer, the company will bring a Lync app for Android tablets.

Last year, Microsoft connected Skype and Lync for audio calling and instant messaging. Today, the company demonstrated video calling between Skype and Lync. Microsoft said it would also add native interoperability between Lync and legacy video teleconference systems.

However, Microsoft apparently will continue to promote Skype at consumer applications, while using Lync as a business communications tool.

Giovanni Mezgec, the general manager of product marketing for Skype and Lync, said while Lync contacts will be able to conduct calls and videoconferences with someone on Skype, the Lync user won?t be able to share files. Nor will the Skype user be able to see a PowerPoint presentation a Lync user shares, in some contexts.

Mezgec added Microsoft is betting on the cloud and Lync Online to help make contacts accessible on a variety of platforms. Microsoft will continue to work to ensure that PSTN calls can be made with Lync Online, the company said.
