LG Strengthens Its Semiconductor Business

LG Group will acquire Silicon Works, S, Korea's largest fabless semiconductor company, as semiconductors can offer a synergy potential to LG's cell phone and auto components businesses.

Silicon Works designs driver ICs for small and medium-sized displays for smartphones and table PCs, LED driver ICs, sensor ICs for automotive applications, and touch ICs.

LG has been engaged in semiconductor businesses and specifically the fabless semiconductor industry.

The company is running a research center for SIC so that it can feature its own octa-core application (Odin) processor in LG phones.

LG Group also holds a 64.8 percent stake in LUSEM, a maker of LCD driver ICs for HD displays.

The group also owns LG Siltron, a producer of wafers for semiconductors.

Industry observers claim that LG could also acquire Dongbu HiTek, which was offered for sale. Dongbu HiTek recently began to mass-produce and supply LED driver ICs for smartphones to US-based Kinetic Technologies.
