Samsung Looks At Japanese Murata for S8 Batteries

Following the recall of the Galaxy Note 7 smartphone due to battery issues, Samsung Electronics is discussing a supply deal with Japan's Murata Manufacturing for batteries for its upcoming Galaxy S8 smartphones.

According to Nikkei business daily, Murata may replace Amperex as one of the two battery suppliers for the S8 depending on how the talks proceed.

The Samsung's Galaxy Note 7 was recalled globally last year after battery defects led to numerous phones catching fire.
The smartphone maker identified that faulty batteries from two suppliers - Samsung SDI and China's Amperex Technology Ltd - were to blame for the product's failure that wiped $5.3 billion off its operating profit.

Samsung and Murata did not respond to requests for comment.
