The process of formatting may fail for many reasons, including incorrect installation, physical damage, or a virus. To determine whether the drive is the cause of this or other possible failures, Western Digital has developed a diagnostic utility called Data Lifeguard Diagnostics. This utility can test a drive and, in some cases, repair a defective drive. It also has the option to clear the drive of any software (including a virus).
