DVD-RAM drives

DVD-RAM drives by Panasonic and Hitachi write to cartridge based DVDs (ie they're discs incased in a cartridge). To write to these discs they have to be formatted as UDF (same principle as a packet foramtted CD), you then use drag and drop to write the data. The downside of this is that most DVD drives cant read back these discs or carts which really minimises the compatability - another downside is that (like packet formated CDs) the capacity is reduced a few hundred MBs after formatting. DVD-R / DVD+RW will be available soon and allows you to write on DVD discs in the same way you would onto a normal CD-R. You would either copy a disc or pre-master files to put on it. These are good because you dont loose anyspace to the format and they have 99.99% compatability Some DVD-RAM's allow you to take the disc out of the cartridge and have them work in 3rd generation dvd-roms. Supposedly DVD+RW won't have nearly the same issues as DVD-RAM
