The ATI Radeon X1800 GTO is the red team's answer to its mid-range woes. This new card seeks to gun down the GeForce 7600 GT but can its features and performance make up for its higher price? We have all the answers with a retail Radeon X1800 GTO from GeCube...

In line with its budget image, GeCube sends us its normal version of the ATI flagship Radeon X1800 XT 512MB, the GC-X1800XTD-VIE3 in a typically humble box. As usual, GeCube offers a rather thin bundle but read on to see if it can perform up to the mark...

GeCube has once again produced an extremely competent graphics card with the Radeon X800 GTO that uses its unique single slot hybrid heat pipe cooler. With the exception of its proprietary cooler, which can be found on a number of GeCube cards, this is a very ordinary card. From the default speeds that kept to the reference specifications, to the standard outputs available, the GeCube Radeon X800 GTO sticks to the well trodden path taken by predecessors like the Radeon X800 GT. And as with GeCube's graphics offerings, the included package is typically skeletal with only one DVD playback application...

The Radeon X550 was introduced with little fanfare by ATI in June as a better performing X300. It has the same core, the RV370 as the Radeon X300 but comes with a higher core clock speed of 400MHz compared to 325MHz for the X300. However, the number of pipelines remains the same at four pixel pipes and a pair of vertex engines. The boost in clock speed, together with its attractively low price makes the Radeon X550 a potent competitor to NVIDIA's GeForce 6200 cards...

Performance is where the higher clocked memory of the GeCube has the advantage over the competition. There may be other vendors who may do the same but they are also likely to charge a premium for their products, something that GeCube seems to have avoided. Of course, the 20MHz speed bump is quite minor but it does help to distinguish the GeCube from other cards. Overclocking is also another area where the GeCube did decently and the excellent cooler is probably a contributing factor to its overclocking headroom...

GeCube's single slot cooling solution for the X850XT is very impressive from an engineering perspective. Performance is great too and if you fancy becoming a CrossFire early adopter, this could be a great first step. The lack of Shader Model 3 support is a shame but the superb physical connectivity makes up for it. However, if the sensible gene kicks in when the credit card comes out, you'll find that an X800XL or 6800GT card will give you almost as much performance and leave you with enough change to pick up a few decent games.

There's not much more to say about the card, really. It's light on games in the bundle and the presentation needs a rethink, but I can't think of anything that counts against it otherwise. So, pair it with Rivatuner for arguably the best high-end performance board on PCI Express that money can buy. To sum up, it's the mighty R480 core in full four quad mode with a cooler to make it all worth it, that'll do XT PE speeds without question.

GeCube pull off silent X700 PRO running with aplomb, for competetive money, by not going overboard on the bundle. If it lies in your price range and silence appeals, be sure and consider it. GeCube promise that availability will be strong in early 2005. Recommended based on that.
