"Netgear's WNDR3700 has all the features we've come to expect from high-end routers, including a dual-band radio that enables you to operate two networks on different frequency bands, a USB port for attaching shared storage, the ability to establish a guest network (two, in fact), and, of course, support for the IEEE 802.11n standard. But the WNDR3700 also has a few features that we haven't seen in any router, including the ability to monitor and even limit the amount of data that can be downloaded from or uploaded to the Internet, a valuable benefit if your Internet service provider caps your bandwidth and charges you for exceeding that cap. Still, there's one feature that's missing: The ability to share an attached printer over a network."

If you mention VoIP these days most people will think of Skype, which shows how huge Skype has become in quite a short time. The company has been busy pushing hardware for its Voice-over-IP service and we've seen some good, some not so good and some really awful attempts at making Skype handsets. A lot of people run Skype on their Windows Mobile devices as well, and with varying degrees of success. However, today we're looking at the latest generation of Skype hardware for the home, a cordless phone that uses DECT which is common on many cordless home phones.

Netgear consistently produces high-quality networking devices, but the company has been dragging its feet in the network attached storage (NAS) market. Thankfully, all is about to change. The ReadyNAS NV+ is the first product to hit the market since Netgear's acquisition of privately-held Infrant Technologies earlier this year. The ReadyNAS NV+ lineup (available from just £587) is powered by Infrant's proprietary network storage processor, Linux-based RAIDiator operating system and patent-pending Expandable Protection (X-RAID) technology, which allows for automatic RAID volume expansion as additional drives are added. Not only that, but the device looks fantastic thanks to its robust aluminium enclosure and Power Mac G5 front grill.

The worldwide market demand for consumer network storage is in the midst of a marked increase in conjunction with the digital revolution and the upsurge in volume of digital assets acquired per person. Netgear's SC101T is a neat solution that will help users to familiarise themselves with the enormous benefits of implementing a centralised, redundant storage solution that is price sensitive, fast and safe. Performance is also up with most desktop NAS appliances. It doesn't offer the range of features (networking protocols and OS support is relatively limited, for instance) and capacity larger businesses require, but for tech-savvy home users and small offices, we think it confidently hits the spot.

The SC101T remedies the shortcomings of its predecessor and adds support for high capacity SATA hard disks. Performance is up with most desktop NAS appliances making this a very interesting and affordable alternative for shared network storage although make sure you have a few spare IP addresses to hand.

The WNR854T is a snap to setup and configure thanks to the bundled wizard, but it's not without its shortcomings. Most noticeably, there is no wall-mount option (which is where you'll get best reception) and the upright case with internal antenna makes positioning difficult. The cords also tug at the very light case. It also lacks configuration for QoS, has support for only one DDNS provider, and port forward/port triggering options are sparsely populated. But for many, these advanced features don't mean much. The back of the router has the usual four-port switch, and the front has a nice array of easy to read indicator lights. Ultiamtely it's speed, security and manageability that counts, and Netgear's WNR854T is the fastest of the draft-N routers we've tested. It also has some great extras, such as a Gigabit switch, but it does disappoint slightly at long range. Nevertheless, if you are thinking of making the move to draft-802.11n, you can't do much better than this top wireless performer.

We've always been particularly taken by the desktop NAS appliances from Infrant Technologies with the compact and bijou ReadyNAS NV garnering a well deserved Recommended award thanks to its superb level of features and sleek design. Well, Netgear thinks the same as while we were looking at the latest ReadyNAS 1100 rack mount NAS appliance it announced that it had acquired Infrant Technologies.
