The last while, we've reviewed portable 2.5 inch USB drives from both Maxtor (OneTouch 4 Mini) and Buffalo (MiniStation TurboUSB). Both units were solid performers and seemed to bring their own unique features to the table. This time, we've managed to snag one of Western Digital's new MyPassport Elite 2.5 inch Portable USB Hard Drives. The Elite gives us a unique enclosure with a soft-touch finish and an innovative external capacity gauge. It comes in capacities of 250GB and 320GB and is backed up by a 5 year warranty. Let's check it out!

Unlike their Caviar GP hard drives, the Caviar SE16 drives are performance-grade desktop hard drives. As such, they have platters that spin at full 7200 RPM. Coupled with their use of perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR), the higher spindle speed allowed the Caviar SE16 to deliver incredibly high transfer rates.

As various components become more advanced, they also require more power to operate. According to Western Digital, the average 1 TB hard drive has a power consumption rating greater than 13.5 watts. Western Digital's new GreenPower drive, which we will be looking at here today, claims to shave 4-5 watts over typical drives in the same category. Any power saving is a welcomed addition, but will the drive's performance be hampered to accomplish this?

The Western Digital 1 TB Caviar GP delivers a terabyte of storage capacity with low power consumption at a relatively low cost. If large, affordable storage capacity in a single drive is what you are looking for, then this is the drive you are looking for.

Although Western Digital did not reveal it, the Scorpio is certainly making use of perpendicular recording technology to achieve its performance levels. Of course, there's only so much they can do with perpendicular recording technology. It is likely that the Scorpio also uses four platters to attain its remarkable storage capacity of 320 GB.

It seems as if the folks at Western Digital have been working late night in their R&D department as the new Velociraptor takes the Raptor series to the next level. The Raptor series of drives were already a hall of fame winning product and with new drives with basically twice as fast overall performance levels these new Velociraptors will take their rightful place alongside their predecessors. The new Velociraptor is also very quiet running; you can barely hear it when engaged, always a good thing. Games were accessed faster, files transferred quicker and Music ripped seamlessly.

The Western Digital VelociRaptor was a blast to test since it's not every day something this new and innovative comes across the test bench. The Western Digital VelociRaptor is hands down the fastest single hard drive we have ever tested and it is hard to believe that the firmware is still being improved. It will be exciting to see how much more performance Western Digital will be able to get out of the VelociRaptor before it hits retail stores in May. As it stands right now having a burst speed of over 250 MB/s and a sustained read speed pushing over 100 MB/s is enough to put a smile on our face. Just imagine running RAID 0 with a pair of these!

Western Digital is unveiling a brand new enthusiast-class hard drive today, the 10K RPM Velociraptor WD3000GLFS. Like the previous generation WD Raptors that came before it, the 300GB WD Velociraptor shares the aforementioned 10K RPM spindle speed, and they have the same 16MB buffer, reliability ratings, and acoustic and environmental characteristics as well. The WD Velociraptor sports a completely new design, however, that offers significantly increased performance, in terms of access times, IOPS, and data transfer rates. Come on by the site and check it out...

The use of perpendicular recording technology allowed Western Digital to deliver a storage capacity of 500 GB using only two platters. Fewer platters mean lower costs and lower power consumption. The high areal density achieved using perpendicular recording also greatly increased its platter-to-buffer transfer rate. Little wonder how it did so well in our benchmarks.

We hope you all had a good weekend. We're writing this morning to let you know that we've just posted a new article at HotHardware in which we evaluate the features and performance of Western Digital's Caviar RE2 750 GB hard drive. Western Digital?s RE2 lineup is targeted at workstations and servers, which need lots of disk capacity along with top-notch RAID performance and long-life reliability. At its core, the RE2 lineup is identical to the SE16 lineup for the performance desktop, but the RE2 has a slightly different feature set, along with more robust MBTF (mean-time between failure) ratings and warranties. We test the drive standalone and in a dual-drive RAID 0 configuration. Head on over to the site and check it out...

While SSD or Solid State Disks are making their way in, we are still working with the current generation of storage and Western Digital has managed to do very well at increasing sizes and speeds. The underside of the drive is extremely clean of high rise circuits and components, simply because they have been sandwiched between the top of the PCB and the lower casing of the drive. With this design you don?t have to worry about any short circuits or clearance issues.

With drives as large as 1TB (that's a terabyte, you know? 1024GB) available in mainstream technology, the once considered monstrous 500 giggers now seem like pocket change and are the budget user's choice buy. Today we're going to have a look at Western Digital's 500GB Caviar SE16 (WD5000AAKS) drive, one of the most popular drive for system builders lately.

The 250GB version of the Western Digital Scorpio 2.5 inch SATA hard drive was reviewed at Bigbruin.com in September 2007, and it made a very positive impression. With an even higher capacity and faster transfer rates, it seems that the newer 320GB version would be destined for even greater accolades.
