Patriot Memory has made quite a name for itself in the DDR2 market, its memory may not be the fanciest but damn does it go fast. To make things even sweeter, it prices its memory modules very aggressively and the PDC22G9200ELK is a prime example of the best of both worlds.

The minimum amount of memory you should be running a computer with is 2GB RAM, even if you're only running Microsoft WindowsXP. If it's Microsoft Windows Vista, even more memory may be required! I've noticed that extra memory helps when I play my favorite game titles, and particularly so if you like to play with all the eye candy maxed out. More memory is a must!

In our continuing coverage of high end RAM kits, today at HardwareLogic we shift our attention from the usual suspects and cast a gaze on Patriot. While no stranger to the memory market, they're relatively new to competing at the enthusiast end of the spectrum, and this is the first time we've officially put one of their products under our spotlight. Will they leave a first impression worthy of subsequent looks, or have us yearning for old reliables?

Overclocking was nothing short of impressive, tight timings and great speeds, gives you some headroom if needed. With performance, looks and overclocking agility, Patriot once again launches a highly competitive solution that just happens to be a 2GB kit instead of 1GB. Flaws are few, and they revolve around documentation. No information on the Vmem anywhere in literature, therefore we do not know what the voltage ratings are, where can we push this and how far while still being under warranty? That said, there is some great overclocking ability ( 250MHz @ 2.5-4-4-7), and looks very nice with the heatspreaders. Patriot once again is knocking on the "big boy's" doors, by building 2GB Kits that are cost effective and overclock well.

Patriot Memory has been around for quite some time, many of you will recall a few memory reviews by a company called PDP Systems. Patriot Memory is now its own division of PDP System, Inc. They specialize in premium memory modules, for all platforms, and a wide number of flash products. These same great folks that brought us the Patriot PC2-5600 1GB +XBLK DDR2 has sent us their 2GB PC4000 kit for review...

Patriot Memory has been trailblazing some new paths for flexible DDR2 this year; memory that can run at multiple speeds with multiple CAS latency settings. This versatility makes it possible to apply a single pair of DDR-2 in a couple different ways. The Patriot PDC22G8000+XBLK Rev.2 memory is a "jack of all trades" DDR-2 module. This pair of dual channel DDR-2 RAM is capable of running with timings as tight as 3-3-3 under DDR2-667 (PC2-5300) speeds, and with timings as tight as 4-4-4 under DDR2-1000 (PC2-8000) speeds...

The Patriot Memory PDC2G4000ELK DDR kit is made up of two 1GB DDR-500 DIMMs which are rated to run at up to 250 MHz in a dual channel configuration, with CAS Latency timings of 2.5-4-4-7. The Patriot PDC2G4000ELK memory kit retails for $274 CDN ($240 USD, £135 GBP) , and that's on par with similarly paced RAM. As you can see a set of custom red aluminum heatspreaders are used; at higher speeds and voltages the heatspreaders do a decent job at keeping the memory cool. If you end up running at stock speeds these are mostly serving a cosmetic duty. The heatspreaders are attached to the TSOP-II DRAM via double sided tape, not the best for thermal transfer but it gets the job done...

What sets this pair of PC2-8000 DDR2 memory apart from the competition is that it's capable of three different frequency & timings settings. Patriot Memory's PDC22G8000+XBLK DDR-2 is rated for a CAS Latency of 3 at DDR2-667 speeds, CAS 4 at DDR2-800 speeds, and to reach DDR2-1000 speeds a CAS Latency of 5. This pair of RAM is so utterly new, so bleeding edge that you can't get them yet... so consider this your sneak peak!

Being able to run DDR600 is a great feeling. And the only way to achieve this feel is to use ram with the Samsung TCCx chips in it. And that is actually what Patriot did. It is always a good thing to be able to lower that CPU multiplier and crank up the HTT to get max performance. With Patriot offering the end-user a great set of ram makes all the above possible. The heat shields that was combined with the +XBLK line of ram is a nice touch from the norm. Lately everyone has been into the whole shiny bling-bling type of heatspreader. Patriot decided to add a bit of uniqueness to theirs...

Patriot's Extreme Performance PDC1G5600ELK dual channel DDR memory is some of the fastest on the market, and it most certainly caters towards enthusiast users. On its website, Patriot Memory takes the progressive step of stating that these PDC1G5600ELK modules are tuned to run on the DFI LANParty NF4 motherboard - essentially what we have here is DDR performance tuned for a specific AMD Athlon64 platform. There is a good reason for selecting the DFI LANParty NF4-series motherboards over all others, they are among the best overclocking motherboards in recent history...
