The petite size of the Seagate 120GB Momentus 5400.2 PATA hard disk certainly belies its amazing capacity. Its compact 2.5" form factor packs in 120GB of storage space! This amazing capacity is probably due to the higher areal density of the Momentus 5400.2's platters, although the integration of STMicroelectronics' Smooth Drive technology may have allowed them to pack more bits into the limited surface area of the small platters. Unlike most notebook drives, the Seagate 120GB Momentus 5400.2 hard disk comes with a massive 8MB SDRAM buffer. Such a large buffer is usually found only in high-end desktop drives. Needless to say, this large buffer will greatly improve its burst transfer performance.

The Seagate 400GB Barracuda 7200.8 not only comes with a remarkable 400GB of storage space, it's also a fast hard disk. Even though its platters spin at the same speed (7200 RPM) as those of the Barracuda 7200.7, the 400GB Barracuda 7200.8 hard disk managed to trounce the older drive with a 24% faster read speed as well as a 29% faster burst speed! The higher read speed is entirely due to the higher areal density of the Barracuda 7200.8's platters while the higher burst speed has the SATA interface as well as the fast 8MB buffer to thank for...

Although the speed of external USB hard drives are a bit slow, having 400 gigs of backup storage space is simply awesome. Although the power supply and cable can be clumsy when transporting the drive from place to place, it is good to know that any Windows 2000/XP machine will recognize the drive automatically without installing extra drivers from a disk. At 400gb, the Seagate External Hard Drive is the ultimate external storage solution for any home or office! ClubOC recommended...

With hard drive capacities increasing at an exponential rate backing up your PC has become an increasingly difficult task. As far as capacities go, Hitachi is in the lead at the moment with its recently announced 500GB drive. The Seagate 400GB Pushbutton Backup external hard drive might not be able to back up the Hitachi monster drive, but it should be ample for most of us.

The goal of the Pocket Hard Drive is to provide high portable storage. It's aimed for high flexibility and not high performance. Sure the drive spins at 3,600RPM and comes with 2MB of cache but the main wonder highlight of the drive is the ease of use. With majority of systems operating under Windows XP, the drive is simply plug-n-play. The high storage makes the Pocket Drive a much better choice than pen drives. Compress a movie and transfer it over to the Pocket Drive, head over to a friend's place and enjoy a movie night...
