AMD Ships First Sub-$100 Quad-Core CPU

As part of the new desktop platform designed for mainstream consumers, AMD today announced the first ever quad-core processor for less than $100 Suggested System Builder Price (SSBP). The new AMD Athlon II X4 quad-core processor series includes the Athlon II X4 630 and the Athlon II X4 620 models.

The Athlon II X4 630 is clocked at 2.8GHz, has 2MB of cache memory and Hyperthreading is clocked at 4GHz. It sios available for $122 (SSBP)

The Athlon II X4 620 runs at 2.6GHz (2MB L2 chache, HT 4GHz, 95W TDP) is priced at $99 (SSBP).

Both processors fit into AM3 sockets and support DDR3 memory speeds of up to 1,333MHz, as well.

By balancing the power of new AMD Athlon II X4 quad-core processors and the AMD 785G chipset featuring ATI Radeon HD 4200 graphics, AMD promises to deliver smooth HD visuals and the foundation for a great Windows 7 experience.

"When matched against similarly priced competitive processors, the AMD Athlon II X4 620 processor delivers superior multitasking performance allowing mainstream users to do more in less time, for less money," AMD says.

Intel's cheapest quad-core CPU, the 2.33GHz Core 2 Quad Q8200, remains priced at $150.

The new 45nm processors are part of the AMD's new desktop platform designed for mainstream consumers. Combining the efficiency of 45nm processors and this platform?s built-in power management technologies for a cool and quiet PC, an AMD Athlon II processor-based platform can serve-up a Blu-ray movie experience using less energy than a standard 75 watt light bulb.

This platform also can improve business users? experience as part of AMD Business Class technology. AMD Business Class technology for desktop PCs designed for Small and Medium Businesses (SMBs), large enterprises and the public sector. The platform delivers the benefits of the latest AMD CPUs, chipsets and graphics hardware to business users. AMD Business Class technology, including platforms configured with AMD PhenomTM II and AMD AthlonTM II 45nm processors, AMD 7-Series chipsets and ATI Radeon HD 4000 series graphics processors, promise to offer superior value, advanced visual productivity, and support for essential manageability, security and virtualization features.
