Apple May Bring Back the Fingerprint Reader - Under the Display

Smartphones Dec 3,2018 0

Supply chain insiders have reportedly revealed that Apple is seriously considering bringing back the fingerprint reader to its devices, this time using in-display sensors.

Patently Apple notes that Apple is currently evaluating biometric sensor suppliers O-film, General Interface Solution and TPK Holding. The technology is said to be for next year’s iPads first.

Using the in-display fingerprint reader solution would help Apple reduce the bezel size and eliminate the home button on the iPad and iPad Mini ranges, saving th costs of the more expensive Face ID feature.

Patently Apple says O-film, GIS and TPK Holding are also the suppliers for Samsung’s 'ultrasonic' in-display reader which will be used in the Galaxy S10, set to launch in February 2019, during MWC tradeshow in Barcelona. Ultrasonic readers are said to be as quick and accurate as any physical reader and even more secure.
