LG Display Becomes Worlds First to Verify Commercialization of Blue Phosphorescent OLED Panels

LG Display Becomes Worlds First to Verify Commercialization of Blue Phosphorescent OLED Panels

Consumer Electronics May 1,2025 0

LG Display announced on the 1st that it has successfully verified the performance of blue phosphorescent OLED panel commercialization on its mass production line for the first time in the world. Following the development of blue phosphorescence in partnership with UDC last year, the achievement was achieved in about 8 months, and it is said that we are one step closer to the final puzzle of realizing ‘'s dream OLED’.

In the display industry, OLED panels that embody all three primary colors of light (red, green, and blue) with phosphorescence are called ‘dream OLED’. The light emission method of OLED panels is largely divided into fluorescence and phosphorescence. Fluorescence is a simple method of reacting and emitting light as soon as electricity comes in, but the light emission efficiency is only 25%. On the other hand, phosphorescence is a method of storing energy for a while after receiving electricity and then emitting light. Although the technical difficulty is high, the luminous efficiency reaches 100%. Just changing the light emission method from fluorescence to phosphorescence reduces power consumption by 1/4.

However, even though red and green phosphorescence has been commercialized for over 20 years, blue has had difficulty implementing phosphorescence. This is because blue has the shortest wavelength among the three colors and requires the greatest energy.

The LG Display solved this problem with a hybrid two-stack tandem (2 Stack Tandem) structure that accumulates blue fluorescent material on the lower layer and blue phosphorescence on the upper layer. By adding stability, which is an advantage of the fluorescence method, and low power, which is an advantage of the phosphorescence method, power consumption was reduced by about 15% while maintaining the stability of the existing OLED panel level.

In particular, for the first time, LG Display has already completed commercialization verification together with UDC in a successful case where performance evaluation, optical properties, and fairness in an actual mass production line must all be confirmed.

LG Display has independently applied for hybrid phosphorescent blue tandem technology patents in both Korea and the United States.

OLED panels with LG Display's hybrid two-stack tandem can be found at the world's largest display event ‘SID (International Society for Information Display) 2025’, which will be held in San Jose, California, USA, starting on the 11th of this month (local time).

The products on display are small and medium-sized panels that can be applied to IT devices such as smartphones and tablets. As the number of products that require both high definition and high efficiency, such as AI PCs and AR/VR devices, is increasing recently, the application of blue phosphorescence technology is expected to expand rapidly.

LG Display CTO (Vice President) Yoon Soo-young said that the success of blue phosphorescence commercialization verification, which is called the final puzzle for “dream OLED, will be an innovative milestone toward the next generation OLED, and that ” blue phosphorescence technology will have the effect of preempting the future market. He said he expected to enjoy it.
