Macrovision forms music technology division
Macrovision Corporation (Nasdaq: MVSN), the world’s leading developer and vendor of digital rights management (“DRM”) and copy protection technologies, announced today that it has formed a Music Technology Division and has appointed Macrovision executive Mark Belinsky as Senior Vice President and General Manager of the new business unit. Belinsky brings over 20 years of management experience in the fields of digital rights management, copy protection, software licensing, operating systems, and network computing technologies to this new position.
Macrovision also announced that it has closed the previously announced acquisition of the assets of Midbar Technologies, Ltd., which provides Macrovision with additional technologies and intellectual capital in order to develop a “best-of-breed” digital rights management solution for the music industry.
“Digital rights management and copy protection solutions for the worldwide music industry represent one of Macrovision’s most important growth opportunities,” said Macrovision president and CEO Bill Krepick. “By forming this new division under Mark Belinsky, we are poised to turn the combined strengths of the Macrovision and Midbar products and organizations into solutions that address the evolving needs of music labels, artists and consumers. We are fortunate to have someone with Mark’s abilities and experience to lead this effort. This new division further underscores Macrovision’s commitment to the audio space.”
Belinsky joined Macrovision in 1995 as Vice President and General Manager of the company’s Video Copy Protection Division, where he spearheaded the launch of Macrovision’s DVD copy protection business. In that position, he also managed the deployment and activation of Macrovision’s pay-per-view copy protection technology in digital broadcast satellite networks around the world. Following this initial assignment, Belinsky served as Macrovision’s Vice President of Business Development and as Senior Vice President and General Manager of the company’s Globetrotter Enterprise Software Division. Most recently, Belinsky has been Macrovision’s Senior Vice President of Corporate Strategy. Earlier in his career, Belinsky worked in sales, marketing, and general management roles at high-growth e-commerce, internetworking, and UNIX system software concerns.
“Our customers and partners in the music industry are working overtime to deliver new value to their customers while, at the same time, working to ensure content creators are paid fairly for their creative works and substantial investments in sales, marketing, and distribution,” Belinsky commented. “I’m looking forward to leading the combined Macrovision/Midbar teams to provide a full complement of copy protection and DRM solutions to achieve these important objectives. 2003 will be a critical year for the music business and we look forward to working with our customers and partners to meet their challenges.”
In addition to Belinsky, the Music Technology Division’s management team includes:
Rani Alcalay, serving as Vice President Worldwide Sales. Alcalay was a co-founder of Midbar and previously served as Midbar’s President and CEO.
Adam Sexton, serving as Vice President of Marketing. Sexton joined Macrovision in September 2002, having previously served as Chief Marketing Officer at Supertracks, Vice President of Product Management at Arista records, Vice President of Marketing and International at EMI, and Director of Artist Development at BMG International.
Eyal Shavit, serving as Senior Director of Technology Strategy. Shavit was previously Midbar’s Vice President, Engineering.
Steve Phillippo, serving as Director of Product Management. Phillippo has served as Product Manager for Macrovision’s audio products since early 2000. Phillippo was previously Product Manager and European Technical Support Manager for Macrovision’s consumer software copy protection and DRM technology products since 1998.
The combined Macrovision and Midbar engineering and R&D teams bring significant technical and support resources to the new music technology division.
