Samsung At CES 2015
Samsung on Monday announced at CES its new SUHD TVs based on the quantum dot technology, a portable SSD and new UHD monitors featuring curved designs. Utilizing Samsung's nano-crystal technology and intelligent SUHD re-mastering picture quality engine, Samsung SUHD TVs promise to offer advances in contrast, brightness, color reproduction, and detail, compared to previous displays.
Samsung's SUHD sets use quantum dots and high dynamic range technology - which improves the rendition of dark to bright tones - offering superior picture quality over regular LCD sets at lower cost than organic light-emitting diode TVs.
SUHD TV?s nano-crystal semiconductor transmits different colors of light depending on their size to produce high color purity and light efficiency. This technology produces 64 times more color expression than conventional TVs. The SUHD re-mastering engine automatically analyzes the brightness of images to minimize additional power consumption while expressing high contrast levels and an elevated brightness up to 2.5 times brighter than conventional LCD TVs and twice the color adjustment points.
In essence, quantum-dot technology is impressive, but it?s really a stopgap until OLED TVs become less expensive to produce.
By collaborating with the Hollywood studio 20th Century Fox, Samsung has been able to optimize content to meet premium quality SUHD standards.
Most recently, Samsung partnered with the Fox Innovation Lab to re-master multiple scenes from Exodus film by Ridley Scott, specifically for the SUHD TV.
Samsung SUHD TV JS9500 will feature Samsung?s Chamfer bezel design, adding more depth to the TV screen. SUHD TV JS9000 model has a soft, textured Shirring design on the back.
New for 2015, all of Samsung?s Smart TVs, including the new SUHD TV, will be powered by Tizen, an open-source platform that supports the web standard for TV app development. Thanks to Tizen, Samsung?s new Smart TV platform has new features but it also offers consumers access to more choices for content than before.
The new user interface for Samsung?s Smart Hub is more responsive and playful, allowing users easier access to the content they want. It is simplified to just one screen, displaying your most recent content and tailored content recommendations.
With Quick Connect, Samsung Smart TVs automatically recognize Samsung smartphones once paired via BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) technology. Consumers can share video content from their Samsung smart phone to their Smart TV with the press of a button. Also, users can watch TV through their mobile devices without any apps or pre-settings.
Consumers will be able to stream UHD movies and TV shows from providers such as Amazon, Comcast, DIRECTV, M-GO, and Netflix. In addition, Samsung has enabled a new UHD movie download service utilizing its existing UHD Video Pack in partnership with M-GO, a TVOD service and joint venture between Technicolor and DreamWorks Animation. This download service uses the SCSA (Secure Content Storage Association) standards. In 2015, this service will offer the high quality content for both Samsung SUHD and UHD TVs.
In addition, Samsung Sports Live allows users to watch live games while simultaneously checking team and player stats on the same screen. Samsung has also partnered with global games companies for a large and varied games catalogue.
Samsung also introduces its very own Milk Video platform allowing consumers to discover, collect, and share web videos.
Samsung Smart TV owners can wake-up a bit easier with Briefing on TV. Samsung Smart TVs now act as an alarm, and sync up with Samsung mobile devices, to turn on and display important items such as the time, weather and your schedule with a large screen for the day.
Samsung?s platform powered by Tizen allows Samsung Smart TVs to become part of a much larger content ecosystem and Samsung hopes that Tizen?s compatibility with other devices will establishe Samsung?s Smart TVs as the control center of any Smart Home.
Samsung will offer three new series of SUHD TVs ? JS9500, JS9000 and JS8500 ? in nine screen sizes from 48" to 88".
New portable SSD
Samsung also today unveiled the Samsung Portable SSD T1, an external portable solid state drive (SSD).
Available in 250 gigabyte (GB), 500GB and 1 terabyte (TB) storage capacities, the Portable SSD T1 will launch globally in 15 countries across the United States, European and Asian markets later this month.
The SSD uses Samsung?s proprietary 3D Vertical NAND (V-NAND) technolog also used by Samsung?s internal SSDs. The drive has sequential read/write speeds of up to 450 megabytes per second (MB/s) with a USB 3.0 super speed interface and random read/write speeds of up to 8,000 inputs/outputs per second (IOPS) and 21,000 IOPS respectively. Depending on the file size, the Portable SSD T1 has a data transfer speed four times faster than an external HDD.
With its user interface, the Samsung Portable SSD T1 is easy to set up and protect. With just one user-set password, the drive is safe from unwanted access thanks to AES 256-bit hardware encryption. It is shock resistant up to 1500G/0.5ms and features Dynamic Thermal Guard, which will activate in extreme temperature conditions to protect the drive and any stored data.
The Samsung Portable SSD T1 works with both Windows and Mac PCs using the exFAT file system, eliminating the hassle of having to reformat for every type of computer. New Monitors Featuring High Resolution Displays and Curved Technology
Samsung's 2015 monitor lineup includes the SE790C Curved Monitor - the first 3000R curved monitor with Ultra-Wide QHD resolution (3440x1440) - and the UE590, a UHD monitor with an HDMI 2.0 port and designed for 60Hz PC gaming. Samsung is also launching the UE850 UHD and ECO-Friendly PLS SE650 monitors for creative and enterprise users.
The SE790C supports a 3000:1 contrast ratio. The 3000R curvature widens the field of view and increases users? depth perception, while the monitor?s curved screen edges more closely match the natural curve of a viewer?s eyes.
The ability to easily connect several monitors makes the SE790C perfect for gamers, entertainment enthusiasts and professionals. A 21:9 aspect ratio and wide viewing angles (178°/178°) make it possible to fit even more content on the screen, and view it from anywhere in the room.
The monitor is equipped with Samsung Game Boost technology, which optimizes the picture to make games come alive. Game Boost?s dynamic gamma setting adjusts color and contrast image-by-image, based on the scene?s brightness. It improves brightness and contrast in dark scenes by stretching the gamma, allowing gamers to see all of the action.
The SE790C features 7W stereo speakers that adjust to authentic sound. In addition, in a multi-monitor setup, users can select "left sound" for the left located monitor and "right sound" for the right located monitor to enjoy true stereo surround sound.
The SE790C curved monitor will be available beginning January 6, 2015 for an MSRP of $1,199.99.
The Samsung UE590 is an UHD monitor with rich contrast and rapid response times. It has an HDMI 2.0 port and supports the full Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI) color space, a range of color support defined by content creators and display manufacturers.
DCI support coupled with up to a 1 millisecond response rate allows the UE590 to keep up with even the fastest moving movies and games.
The UE590 monitor will be available beginning March 2015 for an MSRP of $599.99.
The UE850 is part of Samsung?s line of UHD desktop monitors. Designed for professionals requiring accurate image reproduction, the monitor features a height adjustable stand among other features. The UE850 lineup includes 24-, 28- and 32-inch models and will be available in Q1 2015.
The Samsung SE650 ECO-Friendly PLS monitor is having minimal impact on the environment. Designed with the Earth and eco-friendly consumers in mind, the SE650 features a 30 percent recycled plastic, PVC-free body. It reduces power consumption to 0.00W in stand-by mode, lower than the average monitor which uses 0.3 W to 0.5W, saving energy, resources and money.
The SE650 features a 6.6mm bezel, slim enough to double the screen size with the addition of a second side-by-side monitor and a glare resistant glass screen that allows users to work comfortably in any type of lighting. The monitor also has two USB inputs.
The SE650 monitor will be available beginning Q1 2015.
