Samsung Display Buys Quantum Dot Technology From SEC
Samsung Display wil soon acquire a new Quantum Dot (QD) exclusive technology that will help the company reduce the number of processing and production cost by a large margin. The new QD technology is different from the QD material covered film panel that Samsung Electronics uses. Until now, the company worked to preoccupy the QD TV market by internalizing material sources to complete products.
The QD TV manufacturing method that the Samsung Electronics uses is applying QD film onto the LCD panel backlight unit (BLU) and increase color reproductive capacity. Currently Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics and Chinese company is producing QD TV in the same method.
Samsung has secured the original technology from Samsung advanced institute of technology for creating QD source, and Hansol Chemical creates the original material. Yet the price for QD film is still high. Especially the price becomes more burdensome as the panel gets bigger. Korea IT News reports that a 30-inch QD film costs around $100 USD.
Samsung Display is developing a method, unlike the film method, of using QD material to increase color reproductive capacity during color filter process. LCD color filter is optical component in form of a thin film that realizes colors in the liquid crystal display. Samsung Display is planning to put the QD material in the color process so that they would reduce the number of processing.
Samsung released 'SUHD TV' last February, which has QD film applied.
