Sony Returns to the OLED TV Market With New Models

Sony Returns to the OLED TV Market With New Models

Consumer Electronics May 9,2017 0

Sony will start selling its new 4K ultra-high-definition TVs featuring an organic light-emitting diode display in Japan starting from June 10.

The 65" model (KJ-65A1) and the 55"inch model (KJ-55A1) of the new Bravia A1 series will be priced at about $7,000 and $4,400, respectively.

The new series OLED 4K HDR TVs ar featuring 8 million self-emitting pixels to produce amazingly real pictures with the deepest blacks, detailed shadow expression and vibrant colours. Sony's Acoustic Surface technology delivers engaging sound directly from the TV's screen.

The new BRAVIA OLED series is powered by Sony's 4K HDR Processor X1 Extreme and supports Dolby Vision, the HDR format from Dolby Laboratories.

The series is powered by Android TV, which brings movies, TV shows and thousands of apps into the home in an instant.

Sony first started selling a small OLED TV in 2007, a world first, but it was withdrawn from the market in 2010. The current models are based on OLED panels outsourced possibly from LG Display.

Sony also announced in Japan the release of the "STR-DN1080" 7.2 Channel Home Theater AV Receiver, which debuts on June 17 for 77,800 Yen ($680).

The STR-DN1080 is a 7.2 channel AV receiver with support for Dolby Atmos and DTS:X object-based audio formats. The device incorporates Sony's Phantom Surround Back tech, allowing the receiver to create a 7.1.2 ch speaker configuration with a 5.1.2 ch speaker setup. Likewise, the unit also includes support for several legacy surround formats like Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. The company's new D.C.A.C. EX sound field compensation technology is featured as well, combining advanced D.C.A.C.2 with Speaker Relocation. This process balances audio output to closely simulate sound as would be produced from optimally positioned and angled speakers.

The receiver offers six HDMI inputs, and two outputs that support full HDCP 2.2 compliance, 4K 60P (4:4:4. 3) Ultra HD content, and the new BT.2020 wide color gamut broadcast standard. The unit can also simultaneously distribute 4K video and multichannel audio to two different zones. In addition, the STR-DN1080 is capable of High-Resolution Audio, including DSD native playback. Finally, USB, Bluetooth, Chromecast built-in, Spotify Connect, and Wireless Multi-Room capabilities are featured as well.
