Wii Sales Fall in U.S. Again

Wii Sales Fall in U.S. Again

Gaming Nov 13,2009 0

The Wii has recalimed its spot at the top of the US game hardware sales charts, according to results released today by the NPD Group. Nintendo's Wii returned to the No. 1 in the monthly home game console rankings, following last month's surge to the top by Sony's PlayStation 3.

The Wii sold 507,000 units in the U.S. in October, followed by 321,000 for the PS3 and 250,000 for the Xbox 360.

Sony's PlayStation 3 dropped to 320,600 in October. Despite the decline in monthly sales, the PS3 still managed to outsell its main competitor, Microsoft's Xbox 360, which sold 249,700 units.

Sales of video game equipment and software in the United States tumbled 18 percent in October to $1.07 billion, the research group said. Sales of video game accessories were off 2 percent. Sony's "Uncharted 2" was the top-selling title in the month.

"Based on typical industry seasonality, the industry is on track to generate full-year revenues in the range of ($20 billion to $21 billion) in the U.S., which would put it just a bit below last year's sales," said NPD analyst Anita Frazier.

November industry sales will likely get a boost from the Nov. 10 release of Activision Blizzard's "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2," which set a record of 4.7 million sold in 24 hours in North America and the U.K.

The full hardware sales chart follows:

- Nintendo Wii - 506,900
- Nintendo DS - 457,600
- PlayStation 3 - 320,600
- Xbox 360 - 249,700
- PlayStation Portable - 174,600
- PlayStation 2 - 117,800
