Panasonic Unveils 150-inch Plasma Television

Panasonic Unveils 150-inch Plasma Television

Consumer Electronics Jan 7,2008 0

Panasonic unveiled the world's largest plasma television Monday at the opening of the world's biggest consumer electronics trade show. The Viera brand high-definition television called "Life Screen" measures 150 inches, or some 12.5 feet (381 cm) diagonally.

"This stunning display allows you to display the elephant in the room in all its glory," Panasonic AVC Networks Company president Toshihiro Sakamoto quipped while showing it off during an opening speech at the Consumer Electronics Show.

Panasonic crafted the colossal creation for digital theaters and other businesses, but expects it to "make its way into some luxury homes."

Panasonic's previous 103-inch television has sold 3,000 units over the last year, the company said. The new 150-inch PDP will become available in 2009 at an undisclosed price.

The 150-inch PDP delivers features an 8.84 million pixel resolution (2,160 x 4,096) ―more than four times the 1080p HD specification (1,080 x 1,920). With the enhanced PDP technologies Panasonic accumulated in the development of its 103-inch PDP, the 150-inch PDP provides stable and uniform images across the vast expanse of the screen and the same brightness as the 103-inch PDP. Panasonic claims that the new prototype offers true-to-life color reproduction and quick response to moving images.

The new plasma television surpasses in size Sharp's 108-inch liquid-crystal display, the previous largest flat-screen television in the world.

Sharp will begin selling a 108-inch LCD television later this year, executives told the Consumer Electronics Show on Sunday.

At CES, Panasonic also showcased other prototypes including a 42-inch panel with double efficiency technology that halves energy consumption while maintaining the same brightnes and a less than one-inch super-thin 50-inch PDP.
