Samsung to Pursue Development of TMOS Displays

Samsung to Pursue Development of TMOS Displays

Consumer Electronics Feb 3,2009 0

Samsung plans to develop panels using the Time Multiplexed Optical Shutter (TMOS) display technology, a technology that is claimed to outperform OLED, plasma and LCD technology in every measurable dimension. Samsung has signed an agreement with UniPixel Displays, Inc, a compmany that holds the patents and the licensing for UniPixel technology. Under terms of the agreement, the parties will collaborate on advancing the development efforts around TMOS display technology.

UniPixel?s TMOS display technology is targeted to leverage a subset of the current LCD manufacturing process, offering the potential of lowering the bill of materials manufacturing costs by as much as 60% in some cases, while improving performance characteristics including lowering power consumption and increasing brightness over existing LCD and OLED flat panel display technologies.

UniPixel technology is a breakthrough approach whereby light is injected into the edge of a panel substrate and then emitted from the flat surface through tiny optical shutters that act as the individual pixels. Colors are created using the technique of Field Sequential Color which is similarly used currently in projector systems and rear projection televisions.

UniPixel screens, like fiber optic cable, can be also bendable. The radius of curvature can go up to 20 times the display?s thickness. This would enable a new generation of screens for home theaters. The screens are also 3-D capable.

More inforamtion on the techology is available here.

According to Mr. Reed Killion, President and CEO of UniPixel, "Samsung is one of the premier technology development and manufacturing companies in the world. The Agreement with Samsung will help establish a development platform for TMOS that leverages Samsung?s technology development expertise, process development expertise, manufacturing and assembly expertise as well as providing access to resources and infrastructure unparalleled in the display industry. Samsung?s history of fostering innovative ideas that advance technology and create new products and markets make Samsung the ideal partner to engage in our first TMOS joint development effort."
