T-Mobile Is Getting into Banking With Prepaid Card

Smartphones Jan 22,2014 0

T-Mobile US is extending its Un-carrier consumer movement to personal finance with the Mobile Money by T-Mobile. "We've already transformed how Americans use and pay for phones, tablets and wireless service; why stop there?" said John Legere, president and chief executive officer of T-Mobile. "Millions of Americans pay outrageous fees to check cashers, payday lenders and other predatory businesses - just for the right to use their own money. Mobile Money shifts the balance of power for T-Mobile customers and keeps more money in their pockets."

T-Mobile's Mobile Money service lets subscribers get a prepaid Visa card with no overdraft or maintenance fees. Customers can fill up the card by taking pictures of checks through a smartphone app, or by depositing cash at T-Mobile stores.

For withdrawals, cardholders can hit up in-network ATMs with no fees. The service also offers free bill payments and free transactions to other cardholders. Lost or stolen cards can be replaced for free as well.

At the same time, Mobile Money lets users direct deposit paychecks, deposit checks from capable smartphone cameras, make retail purchases or pay bills.

Starting today, individuals can register for their T-Mobile Visa Prepaid Card at https://t-mobilemoneyservices.com/. Cards will also be available in participating T-Mobile retail locations and beginning in February will be available in Safeway stores in the United States.

The card is issued by The Bancorp Bank, a wholly owned subsidiary of The Bancorp, Inc., pursuant to a license from Visa U.S.A. and may be used everywhere Visa debit cards are accepted.
