LiteOn used a 2MB buffer for the drive. The drive also supports RAW DAO 96 writing (CD).

The LiteOn LDW-811S uses the RPC II region control, allowing a user to change the drive's region at most 5 times. For our tests, we set the region code to 2 (Europe).

- The drive

LiteOn's complete retail package, includes two CD-ROMs, containing the Sonic MyDVD CD/DVD authoring software, CyberLink PowerDVDXP player, installation drivers and a pdf manual.

Two blank DVD recordable discs are also included in the retail package. One is a DVD-R disc from CMC Magnetics, and the other a DVD+RW from Ricoh.

A quick installation quide, audio cable and mounting screws complete the retail package contents.

The drive's front panel has the usual features. The tray door has the RW DVD+ReWritable, DVD R/RW, and Compact disc ReWritable logos located on the left, centre and right respectively. Between the DVD R/RW and Compact disc ReWritable logos is LiteOn's web url, www.liteonit.com. On the lower half of the drive, below the tray door, starting at left there are the headphones jack, volume control and power/activity led, and on the right the eject button. The emergency eject hole is located just above the volume control. The activity LED lights up green when busy and red when reading/writing is in progress.

On the rear panel (schematic included above for clarity) there are the analogue and digital audio outputs (SPDIF), the IDE connector and the power input.

Removing the screws and opening the drive's cover voids the drive's warranty. For reference reasons, we post the following pictures.

The LSI chip shown above, located on the upper side of the controller circuit borad, is from Kyoto-based semiconductor manufacturer ROHM CO., LTD. This IC contains a 3-phase Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) spindle motor driver, PWM driver for feed motor, and BTL driver for actuators. It is specifically designed for half-inch high disc drives which need to address the challenges of high speed and low heat generation in restricted spaces such as those imposed by notebook PCs.

The LiteOn LDW-811S further incorporates (located on the underside of the controller circuit board), a high-speed DVD dual Optical Disk Controller chipset from MediaTek Inc. consisting of two CMOS ultra-scale integrated circuits, the MT1816E and MT1818E. The MT1816E is the front-end analog signal processor and MT1818E is the servo control and Endec IC.

This chipset is suitable for DVD dual drives with both CD/DVD read and CD-R/RW, DVD-R, DVD +RW write functions. The general system specification is 8/8/4/4/48/24/48/16, i.e. DVD+R recording up to 8xS, DVD-R recording up to 8xS, DVD+RW recording up to 4xS, DVD-RW recording up to 4xS, CD-R recording up to 48xS, CD-RW recording up to 24xS, CD-ROM decoding up to 48xS, and DVD-ROM decoding up to 16xS. Moreover, it can support DVD-RAM playback, Mt. Rainier CD-RW/DVD+RW format, and true CAV mode recording functions. In addition, this chipset can support power saving function. Therefore, it can be used for both H/H and Slim drive. In the future, the intended product consists of the enhanced DVD dual drive, Blu-ray drive, AOD drive and Digital Video Recorder (DVR), etc. The enhanced DVD dual chipset can provide system specification of 16/16/8/8/52/32/52/16.

There are some innovative techniques developed in this chipset, including the optical servo control, disk ID & auto calibration, DVD-RAM read signal generator, robust automatic power control system, supporting Mt. Rainier format, MTK-SUPERLinkTM, programmable & flexible write strategy, support LVDS interface and true CAV mode recording technique, etc. Furthermore, since this highly integrated SOC chipset has excellence in system architecture and integration, there is significant cost reduction for the drive makers.

[The above is taken from the Taiwan Hsinchu Science Park's site, where MediaTek Inc. was awarded the Innovative Product Award for the development of this chipset.]

- Installation

The LiteOn LDW-811S was connected to our test PC and was identified as "LITE-ON DVDRW LDW-811S" under WinXP. All tests were done with firmware revision vHS0E.

The following pages include the test results of the LiteOn drive in comparison to two other dual DVD burners, the Optorite DD0401 DVD and the CyberDrive DX082D.

2. Data CD Reading Tests

LiteOn LDW-811S DVD±RW recorder - Page 2

Data CD Reading Tests

- Pressed CD results (Click for CDSpeed results)

The LiteOn LDW-811S drive supports 40x CAV reading speed with CD-ROM/-R. The maximum speed reached was 41.83x on the outer tracks of the disc, with an overall average speed of 31.58x. The results are quite good, although the Cyberdrive DX082D was slightly faster.

On the seek times test, the LiteOn drive returned the slowest times amongst the three drives, especially the full disc seek which was a hefty 200ms, while the random and 1/3 seeks were somewhat better. The Optorite DD0401 was the best performer with 84msec for a random seek.

- CD-R Media results (Click for CDSpeed results)

In the transfer rate test for CDR media, the LiteOn drive returned results very similar to those of the transfer rate test for pressed CDs previously, as was the case with the other two drives. The reading method was CAV, with a start speed of 17.25x, end speed of 41.56x and average of 31.3x. Here too, the LiteOn drive was slightly slower than the CyberDrive.

The seek times for the LiteOn drive were quite slow, a good deal more so than the other two drives. In comparison to the pressed CD seek times, the LiteOn drive's times were markedly up although the random seek time is well within the manufacturer's stated seek time of 140ms. In contrast, the Optorite and CyberDrive drives had marginally faster CDR-Media seek times when compared to pressed CD media.

- ReWritable Media (Click for CDSpeed results)

The LiteOn LDW-811S supports a maximum reading speed of 32x CAV with rewritable media. For the reading test we used 24x High Speed rewritable media from Mitsubishi Chemicals.

The reading speed with CD-RW media was a good deal lower than that with CD-R media. This is again in contrast to the other two drives whose reading times stayed fairly constant regardless of the media type used. The average read time of 25.29x for the LiteOn is quite slow when compared to the 30.65x and 33.08x for the Optorite and CyberDrive drives respectively.

3. CD Error Correction Tests

LiteOn LDW-811S DVD±RW recorder - Page 3

Error Correction Tests

In the following tests we check the drive's behaviour when reading scratched / defective audio discs. The test discs used were the ABEX series from ALMEDIO.

- ABEX TCD-721R

The drive performed very well with the ABEX TCD-721R test disc, giving a very low count on the number of errors at an average of -73.6 dB. Muting error count was minimal and no samples were skipped. The total score of 76.8 is quite good.

- ABEX TCD-726

Total Test Result
100.0 points (out of 100.0 maximum)

The Abex TCD-726 test disc is much easier for drives in general to read, and as such, the LiteOn LDW-811S drive corrected almost all errors with a high overall quality score of 100 points. In fact, the loudness error returned had an average of -174.0 dB which doesn't even register on the graph.

- CD-Check Audio Test Disc

The CD-Check Test Disc is a very useful tool for evaluating the Sound Reproduction / Error correction capabilities of a CD player. The disc offers a signal combination with disc error patterns to rate the drive's abilities to read music and reproduce it completely. Five tracks on the disc contain a sequence of progressively more difficult tests. These tracks are referred to as Check Level-1 through Check Level-5.

The tracks are reproduced (played) through a software multimedia player (i.e. Windows Media Player). Each level is considered as passed, if the tone coming out from the speakers is smooth, continuous without interruptions, skipping or looping. The higher the Check Level passed, the more reliable the sound reproduction of the tested drive.

The drive succesfully passed the first 3 check levels for this test. Playing the 4th and 5th tracks produced a constant noise in the background. Since we are testing the analogue audio output, we could conclude here that the drive is capable of "correcting" errors created by scratches with size less than the 1.125 mm present on the 4th check level. It is a little surprising however, that the LiteOn drive did not pass the 4th check level considering the good results returned in the tests with the ABEX TCD discs previously. The 5th check level, which has a scratch a size of 1.500 mm, is difficult to read with most drives.

- Summary

Combining the two scores from the ABEX tests gives an average total score of 88.4 points out of 100. This is a very good overall score, however the only dissapointment was the drive's inability to read at least the 4th check level on the audio test disc.

4. DVD Reading Tests

LiteOn LDW-811S DVD±RW recorder - Page 4

DVD reading tests

- Single Layer DVD-ROM (Click for CDSpeed results)

In the DVD single layer read test, in comparison with the Cyberdrive and Optorite drives and noting that all three drives support a maximum reading speed of 12x for DVD-ROM media, the LiteOn LDW-811S is quite fast with an average speed of 9.3x, and the CyberDrive only slightly faster at 9.93x.

The manufacturer's specifications give the LiteOn drive as having a seek time of 160msec for DVD media. NeroCDSpeed reports that the drive needed 169ms for full seek time, 94 ms for 1/3 seek and 85 ms average. The LiteOn performed quite well here giving very fast access times which coincide with the results in the speed test above.

- Dual Layer PTP DVD-ROM (Click for CDSpeed results)

The two layers of a PTP DVD-ROM disc are read sequentially with the drive starting the read process from the inner tracks on the disc, which is the beginning of each layer, and progressing outwards towards to the outer tracks for each layer.

According to the manufacturer, the LiteOn LDW-811S has a maximum reading speed of 8x with dual layer DVD-ROM discs. The drive managed to reach a maximum reading speed of 8.41x and was slightly slower than the Optorite drive. As can be seen from the graph above, the LiteOn drive was only slightly slower than the Optorite DD0401 on all three occasions. Again, it appears to be a quick reader.

Here too, the seek times are quite fast. The drive finished with a random seek time of 89ms, faster than the other drives.

- Dual Layer OTP DVD-ROM

The first layer of an OTP dual layer DVD-ROM is read exactly the same way as the first layer of the PTP disc we tested previously. The difference here is the reading strategy of the second layer on the disc. The beginning of the second layer is located in the outer part of the disc, so the drive starts reading from the outer tracks inwards towards the inner tracks of the disc.

As we have experienced with some other 8x DVD recorders, so too LiteOn seems to have problems reading the dual layer OTP DVD-ROM. The first layer was read flawlessly but at the beginning of the second layer the reading speed fluctuateded. Software playback, however, did not give any noticable problems.

- DVD Ripping Tests

We measured the DVD-Video ripping speed of the LiteOn LDW-811S using the latest version of DVD Decrypter. The DVD Video title is the "Matrix" pressed DVD-Video.

The drive ripped the DVD movie files to the hard disk at 9295 KB/s (6.88x) average. The performance is quite high, considering that the Optorite and Cyberdrive were slower with 4.32x and 5.54x average, respectively.

- DVD Recordable / Rewritable reading Tests

The chart below shows the Nero CDSpeed results with the following media:

The LiteOn drive did not prove quite as fast a reader with DVD +/- formats. The LiteOn LDW-811s was quite a bit slower than the other two drives used as comparison with reported average reading speeds for all formats being from 4.63x to 4.7x.

As with the minus format, NeroCdSpeed reports that the Optorite drive reads the -R format at an average speed of 4.65x and -RW at 4.63x.

5. DVD Error Correction Tests

LiteOn LDW-811S DVD±RW recorder - Page 5

DVD Error Correction Tests

In the following tests we examined the DVD reading capabilities of the LiteOn LDW-811s drive with scratched / defective DVD media. For the tests we used CDVD Benchmark and Nero CDSpeed. The reference test media come from ALMEDIO.

- Single Layer media
ABEX TDR-821

This is a single sided, single layer DVD-ROM with a 4.7GB capacity, and its surface has an artificial scratch of dimensions varying from 0.4 to 3.0 mm. The following transfer rate picture comes from the CDVD Benchmark v1.21 transfer rate test.

The drive read the 821 test disc without reporting any read errors. The yellow dots indicate that the drive gave back different reading speeds for each reading retry, due to the scratched areas. The disc was read accurately and exceeded 12x CAV.

ABEX TDR-825

This is also a single sided, single layer DVD-ROM of 4.7GB capacity. The data structure of the disc is exactly the same as that of the TDR-821, with the difference that there are no scratches on the surface and instead defective areas ranging in dimensions from 0.5 to 1.1 mm. There are also fingerprints with height between 65 and 75 micrometers.

As in the previous test, no read errors occured with this disc. The drive again managed to reach maximum reading speed slightly in excess of 12x CAV.

- Dual Layer media
ABEX TDR-841

This is an 8.5GB dual layer, single sided DVD-ROM disc with artificial scratches of dimensions ranging from 0.4 to 3.0mm, on both layers.

The first layer was read without too much fuss. However the second layer presented a few problems with the deeper scratches where the drive dropped speed before recovering and continuing on to a final maximum speed of just over 8x for both layers. The resultant output can be seen above with the speed change evident in the broken line of the second layer.

ABEX TDR-845

This disc is a single sided, dual layer DVD-ROM disc with capacity of 8.5GB. The only difference between the TDR-845 and the TDR-841 is that the first includes both defective areas and fingerprints. The dimensions of the defective areas range from 0.5 to 1.1 mm and the fingerprints have height sized from 65 to 75 micrometres.

The drive read this disc fairly effortlessly with only a few minor difficulties, primarily in the first layer. Final maxim read speed for both layers exceeded 8x.

ABEX TDV-541

The TDV-541 is a single sided, dual layer DVD-VIDEO disc, with a capacity of 8.5GB.The disc is based on the TDV-540 series which is designed for inspection and adjustment of DVD-VIDEO players. The disc checks the layer switch operation from layer 0 to layer 1 and also includes test pictures and test signals for DVD sound files. The current TDV-541 also checks the error correcting capabilities of the drive and includes scratches sized from 0.4 to 3.0 mm.

Reading the first layer did not prove a problem, with the drive reaching a maximum of just over 8x CAV. The increase in speed is fairly constant and linear, starting at 3.58x and reaching 8.45x by the end of the first layer (outer tracks). The velocity (yellow line on the graph above) also remained fairly constant. The second layer however is quite a different tale. The drive had a lot of difficulty at the beginning (outer tracks on the disc's surface), where both transfer speed and velocity fluctuated. Only at around the 5GB mark did things settle down. Since the point of the TDV-541 test disc is to check the switch operation from layer 0 to layer 1, it is evident that the LiteOn drive had a few problems, althought it managed to surpass them.

ABEX TDV-545

The TDV-545 disc is based on the TDV-540 series. It is a single sided, dual layer Video/S-2 disc with a capacity of 8.5GB. The TDV-545 includes artificial black dots on the disc's surface, sized from 0.4 to 1.0 mm. It also has 65 - 75 micrometre high fingerprints.

Here too, the second layer presented some difficulties although the drive did recover and continue on. Maximum speed reached was 8.40x CAV at the end of the first layer.

6. Protected Disc Tests

LiteOn LDW-811S DVD±RW recorder - Page 6

Protected Disc Tests
- Reading Tests

To create an image of the various protected titles onto a hard disk, we used CloneCD v.v4.3.1.9 software and the appropriate settings, depending on the protection type of the inserted discs. Below are summarized the capabilities of the LiteOn drive, according to CloneCD software. Notice that the drive supports writing of CD+G under RAW DAO:

The game titles we used for each protection scheme are given in the table below:

Game Title
Protection Scheme
PSX "NBA Jam Extreme"
Lybcrypt
Serious Sam The Second Encounter v1.07
SafeDisc v.2.60.052
VRally II
SecuROM v.2
PSX Pressed Media

SafeDisc v.2

SecuROM v.2

The LiteOn drive supports reading of subchannel data information from data/audio tracks. The drive was very fast with all of the protection schemes except for PSX pressed media, showing up quite well against the other two drives used in the comparison.

- Writing Tests

The LiteOn LDW-811s supports the DAO-RAW writing mode. For checking the drive's EFM correction status, we used 3 different game titles with different SafeDisc 2 versions with the latest software patches installed. After making the images of the various titles to the hard disk, we burned them (maximum speed) with CloneCD. Two different discs were created for each title; one with the "Amplify Weak Sectors" enabled and one more with the function disabled.

The table below shows the results of the attempted backups and whether they ran (game installed / played normally), or not.

DAE Tests

- Pressed and CDR AudioCD results

The LiteOn LDW-811s uses 40x CAV strategy for CD-DA. Below is the resultant output from the CDSpeed transfer rate test with a pressed audio CD:

According to CDSpeed, the average reading speed with this disc was 30.80x, while the reported seek times were satisfactory.

We ripped the contents of the same audio disc to the hard disk with CDDAE software. The drive gave an excellent average ripping speed (burst mode) of 39.4x:

For the same test, the Optorite and CyberDrive drives gave 28.5x and 29.4x average speeds respectively.

The same pressed audio disc was copied onto a CD-R and was read again with CDspeed. Again, the LiteOn drive was very fast with an average speed of 39.8x.

- Advanced DAE Quality

In the Nero CD Speed Advanced DAE test, the LiteOn drive posted an average speed of 28.35, only slightly slower than the other two drives, and a quality score of 100. CDSpeed reports that the drive can read Leadin and Leadout data, Cd Text and Subchannel Data.

- Support of 90/99mins AudioCDs

8. CD Recording Tests

LiteOn LDW-811S DVD±RW recorder - Page 8

CD Recording Tests

- CD-R Writing Tests

The LiteOn LDW-811s supports 8x, 16x, 24x, 32x and the maximum 40x CAV writing speeds. Below you can see the CDSpeed writing simulation graph with Taiyo Yuden 48x CD-R media.

The writing speed at the start of the disc is 18.42x and increases linearly to the end of the disc reaching a maximum of 41.51x. According to CDSpeed, the average writing speed with an 80min disc was 31.42x. The velocity throughout the whole writing process remained quite steady.

- Recording Times

For the burning tests we created an 80min data compilation with Nero Burning Rom and recorded the data on a 700MB disc. The LiteOn drive completed the task in 3:11 minutes, with 40x writing speed selected. The performance is reasonably good for 40x recording speed.

Below are the best writing times at 8x, 16x, 24x, 32x and 40x. In each case, the Seamless Link feature was enabled:

What is good about the above times is that the drive seems to be consistent regardless of disc manufacturer.

- CD-RW Writing Tests

The LiteOn LDW-811s supports 24x P-CAV maximum rewriting speed, with High Speed rewritable media. The drive also writes at 4x CLV with NS CD-RW. Below are the results from the CDSpeed writing simulation test with blank 10x HS-RW media from Ricoh.

The drive starts the writing task at 18.53x and reaches the maximum 24x around the 12:00 min address mark on the disc. According to CDSpeed, the average writing speed was 23.53x.

We also used Nero Burning Rom to burn a data disc using 24x US-RW media from MC. The data compilation burned had a size of 651 MB and the duration of the recording process was 3:44 minutes.

- Packet Writing Tests

Using InCD and Mitsubishi Chemicals 24x US-RW media for all Packet Writing tests, quick format took 32sec. The formatted disc had 530mbs of free space. We copied a 403 MB file (403.147 KB) from Hard Disk (on the same PC as the recorder) to the formatted RW media through Windows explorer (drag and drop).

Writing Quality Tests - 3T Jitter Tests

On an 80min 48X CD-R disc from Taiyo Yuden we burned the same AudioCD project at 8x, 16x, 24x and 40x. The 3T Pit & Land Jitter graphs are presented here.

- 3T Pit results

Generally the drive did not introduce high 3T pit jitter with the specific media. The highest 3T pit jitter was reported from the disc recorded at 16x, in the outer tracks. In general the Jitter remain below the Red Book limit of 35nsec at all speeds. Results of the 40x recorded disc is especially good.

The average 3T Pit Jitter values for all recording speeds are illustrated in the following table.

Here it can be clearly seen that the pit jitter level is low and well within specs.

- 3T Land results

As with pit jitter, land jitter is also quite low and below the Red Book limit of 35nsec. Only at 40x writing speed was there a slight increase and that towards the end, but other than that, land jitter was quite low at all speeds.

And just to confirm it, the average jitter for all speeds presented in the graph below show just how low the values land jitter was.

- Summary

The LiteOn LDW-811s in general presented low jitter values, and while the table above shows that the drive did go over the 35ns Red Book limit (pitt jitter only), the average jitter values indicate a drive that operates well within the limits. What is especially pleasing is that at 40x the values are well within limits.

The following page where we check the jitter levels produced on various manufacturers discs, should give a better indication of the writing quality level of the drive.

10. 3T Jitter Tests 2

LiteOn LDW-811S DVD±RW recorder - Page 10

Writing Quality Tests - 3T Jitter Tests

Here we used 80min CD-R media from various manufacturers and burned the same AudioCD project at 40x. The following graphs show the 3T Pit & Land Jitter results.

- 3T Pit results

With all discs, there was a small increase towards the end when writing on the outer tracks on the disc's surface. The SKC disc gave the worst results being consistently above 35nsec. Only Fuji media (40x) managed to remain below 35nsec over the entire disc.

The average 3T Jitter values for all manufacturers discs are illustrated in the following graph. Here again, it can be seen that the SKC disc was above the Red Book limit.

- 3T Land results

The interesting thing to note here is the almost steady increase in land jitter as writing progresses from inner to outer tracks with again the SKC disc fairing worst of all and Fuji best.

The average values presented below only confirm the pattern we have seen develop so far.

- Summary

Except for the SKC disc, the values for the various manufacturers discs seem to be consistent and steady. Apart from some peaks that produced values above 35nsec, the drive in general kept the jitter values to an acceptable level. Certainly the average values were very good.

On the following page we check the C1 and C2 error rates for the same discs. These are the last of the quality tests.

- Summary

The results are very good. Firstly, there were no C2 errors reported (red line in each of the graphs above). The C1 levels were all very low and perhaps just as important is that the levels are all fairly constant for each disc, which is a good indicator of quality writing. The only glitch occurred with Taiyo Yuden media at 16x where at the end the C1 rate spiked.

12. DVD Recording Tests

DVD Recording Tests

- Writing Performance

The LiteOn LDW-811s supports DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW writing. The maximum supported speed for DVD+R is 8x (6x~8x Z-CLV), 4x CLV for DVD-R, 4x CLV for DVD+RW and 2x CLV for DVD-RW media.

Currently, only a few 8x certified DVD+R media are available on the market. The supported 8x DVD+R media came from Mitsubishi Chemicals, CMC Magnetics, Ricoh and Taiyo Yuden.

8x DVD+R

A 8x DVD+R disc from Mitsubishi-Kagaku was used to check the 8x writing strategy of the drive. The software used was Nero CDSpeed, and its "create disc" function.

The drive started writing at 6.12x, maintaining this speed until the 1.25 GB address mark on the disc, where the speed changed to just a bit over 8x. Overall average speed was 7.50.

The test was repeated with Mitsubishi 4x DVD-R and 4x DVD+RW media, and Fuji 2x DVD-RW media. The end results, presented in consecutive graphs further below, was a near perfect straight line on each occasion.

Below is a CDSpeed screenshot with a 8x DVD+R disc from Mitsubishi.

- Burning Tests

The best recording times are illustrated in the following table after burning 4315MB of data on various DVD±R, DVD±RW media, using the maximum allowed writing speed for each disc. For comparison, we also include the writing times for the Optorite DD0401 and CyberDrive DX082D drives. The LiteOn drive returned some very good times.

Mitsubishi 8x DVD+R media was burned at 8x and gave the best writing time (8:25 min). The drive finished the same writing task with Ricoh 4x DVD+RW discs in 13:45 min, a fast performance for 4x DVD+RW recording. With DVD-R media the time taken was 14.32 mins while for DVD-RW the time was 28.11 mins.

The following screenshot was taken from Nero, after successful burnings with Mitsubishi 8x DVD+R, Taiyo Yuden 4x DVD+R, and Ricoh 4x DVD+RW media. The amount of data is the same for all the tests.

13. PI / PO Error Measurements

KProbe PI/PO quality results

The following screenshots show the PI/PO scans for the various DVD-/+R and DVD-/+RW media, recorded with LiteOn LDW-811s at the maximum permitted speed.

The software used for the measurements was the KProbe v1.1.26, and the reader was LiteOn LDW-811s. The specific methodology is very dependent on the drive used as a reader, while the reliability of the PI/PO provided output is also not technically confirmed. Hence as a result, we cannot safely come up with conclusive results, although we do make a comparison of the drive's behaviour when using various DVD recordable/rewritable media.

The recordable discs used came from Fuji, Mitsubishi Chemicals, N-Tech, Pioneer, Taiyo Yuden and Ritek. Further details about each disc type are presented at the bottom of this page.

  • Only at 16x writing speed introduced high jitter spike and high C1 error rate towards the end

The LiteOn LDW-811s is the third recorder from LiteOn and their second dual DVD recorder. Overall, the drive performed satisfactorily, providing good speeds except for the 6x DVD-/+R and RW formats. It generally provided good quality recording, especially with CD-R media, and good error correction capabilities although at 16x writing speed, towards the end of writing, it introduced a surprisingly high jitter spike, and high C1 error rate.

The 6x DVD-/+R, RW reading speed is a little dissapointing, however this is compensated for by fielding some handy features such as overburning up to 99 minutes, backups of SafeDisc, support for 99 minute audio discs, DAE and protected audio CDs, thus making it a versatile drive.

DVD reading was relatively fast, as it also proved to be a fast drive with DVD ripping and recording. The only blemish was with dual layer media where there was a problem when reading the beginning of the second layer.

Performance with CD media wasn't quite as impressive though, and the seek times could certainly have been better here.

Error correction was also another plus for this drive although, in the check level tests, it only managed to read up to the third level. This probably indicates that the drive can and does bypass scratches and defects located on the media's surface, as long as the affected area isn't particularly large.

The drive is very competetively priced at around $150.
