be quiet! Light Wings Pro IO fan
1. Introduction
be quiet! has been on the ARGB fan market for a long time and is now introducing a new series, Light Wings Pro IO, its first software-controlled, high-end Light Wings fan: a 28mm-thick fan with a Fluid Dynamic Bearing, closed-loop motor control and a continuous rubber frame, driven over a proprietary single-cable IO bus instead of standard 4-pin PWM and 5V ARGB.

On paper the triple frames deliver 82.91 cfm at 1.96 mm H₂O per fan (420mm) or 62.03 cfm at 2.47 mm H₂O (360mm), at 29.2 to 33.9 dB(A) at full speed, with per-impeller speed control, zero RPM at 40% PWM or lower and four lighting zones.

In this review, we examine the whole lineup and answer whether the be quiet! Light Wings Pro IO deserves your money and what it has to offer users.
Lineup and shared specifications
Light Wings Pro IO comprises 12 models across four sizes: two triple-fan single frames that include an IO Controller, and two single-fan expansion units that do not. Per-size performance data is in the model sections further down.

All models share a Fluid Dynamic Bearing, 28mm thickness, a 6–13.2 V DC range, an IO connector, semi-passive (0 RPM) mode via IO Center, a lifetime of up to 60,000 hours at 25°C, and a 5-year warranty.
Design and build
The headline feature is the single frame: on the 420mm and 360mm models all three impellers sit in one 28mm-thick piece. That means one cable run, a cleaner look on a radiator and no gaps between fans. be quiet! says the extra depth leaves room for the blade design to hold airflow and pressure despite the integrated lighting.

The continuous rubber frame does two jobs. It isolates vibration from the radiator or chassis, and it seals against the mounting surface to cut air leakage around the fan, which matters most on radiators. be quiet! says the material was tuned so damping does not cost airflow.

Other design details:
- Offset middle impeller: the center fan runs at a slightly different speed than the outer two, so shared frequencies do not stack and amplify noise.
- Reverse-blade versions: these keep the look right in any mounting position (360mm and 420mm), which helps in reverse-airflow cases and exhaust positions.
- Closed-loop motor control: the motor detects airflow resistance and adjusts output to hold the target speed, which helps on dense radiators.
- Fluid Dynamic Bearing: designed to minimize friction and wear over time.
- Colors: black and white across the range.
Lighting
Lighting is the biggest differentiator: the 420mm and 360mm models split their LEDs into four independently controllable zones, one per impeller plus the frame. Most ARGB fans treat the whole fan as a single lighting element. The 140mm and 120mm expansion fans have two zones, impeller and frame.
You can run all zones as one synchronized effect across the whole cooler, or give each impeller and the frame its own color and effect. The effects are Static, Color Wave, Tornado, Breathing and Temperature. Temperature mode changes color based on CPU, GPU or other monitored sensors.
A color calibration tool lets you match the LED output of the impellers and frame to other RGB devices in your system.
Connectivity and setup
Setup revolves around the IO Controller, which ships with every 420mm and 360mm model. Expansion packs do not include one.
- Single cable: each fan connects to the controller with one IO cable, and fans daisy-chain from fan to fan. Single models (120mm/140mm) only can be connected to 360/420mm models.
- Device limit: one controller supports up to six devices. A 420mm single-frame counts as three, so one controller handles two triple-fan units, or one triple-fan unit plus expansion fans.
- Scaling: up to four controllers can be daisy-chained, for 12 devices in total. be quiet! warns that nine devices on one controller is too many for sufficient power distribution.
- Controller connections: USB 2.0 to the motherboard, SATA power from the PSU, and an optional PWM link to a motherboard fan header for PWM control.
- Cables: the 420mm and 360mm models include a 70cm IO cable, and expansion fans include a 100cm cable. Extra IO Cable Kits cost $19.90 / €18.90.
The single-cable approach suits clean builds, but it adds a controller, a USB header and a SATA connection, which matters in small cases.
