High Performance Group, most commonly referred to as Hiper, is a newly found UK based company which has became well known for their high performance power supply units. Hiper acquired most of their fame for the Type-R series which was released a few years ago. The Type-R series were high performance modular units but a lot of attention was given on their aesthetics factor. Today we will take a look at another approach from Hiper, the Type-M series. The Type-M series are not modular and look quite simple, but they are considerably cheaper than the Type-R series and apparently perform just as well or even better. We will soon see if they are worth your time and money.

The evolution of the ATX power supply seems to be a constant process as computer hardware becomes more powerful and power hungry. First we had simple units with three basic +3.3V, +5V, and +12V rails, then came extra features like Power Factor Correction (PFC) to help deliver cleaner, more efficient power, then came the introduction of SATA hard drives and the PCI-Express interface spurring on the introduction of a new ATX 12v 2.0 standard. Among other things, this new power supply standard includes four extra pins on the main 20-pin ATX motherboard connector (for a total of 24-pins) and multiple 12V rails for increased power delivery to new modern power hungry processors and video cards. Companies then started to develop a modular cabling system that allowed the user to customize what cables and connections they want and what they don't. This helped reduce wire clutter inside the case and set particular products out from the crowd of the usual power supply suspects.

My first impression upon pulling the PSU out of the box was that of surprise. This thing is one long, black, and heavy (6.6 lbs.) mutha of a PSU. If I were to make any car references here, I would say the Type M is definitely looking to be more of a V-8 than a Vtech. Looking at all the angles, it can be seen that Hiper put a lot of detail into the Type M just as they did with the Type R.

Overall the entire package, the product, performance and proprietary cable system puts this PSU in a class by itself. This is a really nice PSU and should be on anyone's short list of computer upgrades. The stable power will keep a system at bay by providing enough current that will energize your hardware with stable power. If you're experiencing glitches, reboots, power sentinel problems with your hardware, try the Hiper Type-R HPU-4B580 power supply!

Although you may not have heard of Hiper, over the past few years they have produced some of the finest power supplies available to the mainstream user and enthusiast alike. However, their new TypeR range of PSUs is scheduled to blow competitors out of the water; with its huge 580W power output, and flashy looks. The particular model I will be reviewing is the Modular TypeR 580W model. TypeR, a name synonymous with speed and power. Let's see if Hiper's flashy boy racer can stand up to this prestigious name...

While this Hiper power supply unit shows a lot of promise, it also shows some room for improvement. Voltage and fan adjustments would be welcome. Higher quality name-brand capacitors and beefier heatsinks would also be recommended if the hardware enthusiast market is to take notice. Also, an optional 24" modular ATX cable would be a welcome addition. When paired with these current features, if Hiper can deliver these additional features in a rev.2 of the product, I think they'll have a big winner on their hands...

The Hiper keyboard breaks no new design ground like a split-keyboard design, or adds any esoteric functions keys or controls. What the Hiper keyboard does do though is offer a compact layout with a comfortable, responsive feel and a pretty slick looking design that would match well with any aluminum case, but especially compliment a desktop SSF aluminum chassis with a silver LCD...

The Hiper Type-R 580W line of power supplies have been popular in Europe, and I believe they will become just as popular in North America also. Even though there is more competition in the modular PSU market here, the Type-R power supplies have some innovations that allow it to stand out from the rest. The connectors are foolproof, the 580 watts of power is sufficient, the voltages are stable, and the operation is quiet. On top of all that, it looks pretty sweet. The Hiper Type-R adheres to the latest ATX 2.2 specifications and is able to accomodate the power requirements of the latest motherboards at a price that is acceptable for a good high wattage PSU.

From the outset, it was always obvious that the Hiper Type R "Blue Label" modular PSU was going to score highly in terms of looks and features, the main question was it as good in terms of performance? Testing has shown that the PSU stands up to the competition, showing both a good level of voltage accuracy and stability. The fact that the internal finish is not as good as the external is not really a problem - you wouldn't expect a stock sporty Ford to look as good in the engine bay as a top of the range Mercedes. ;-)

I have to say that they're not a Ferrari, but they're a long, long way from being a 20 year old banger held together by NOS stickers & duct tape. If I had to stretch the automotive analogy that far, I'd compare the Hiper PSUs reviewed here to a tidy, low mileage Honda Integra ... Type R, of course.
