This is a neat and serviceable multi-function device, which requires very little maintenance and integrates all the main business functions into one, small-footprint device. Print output is good, though copying can be patchy and, surprisingly for Kyocera Mita, it's not the cheapest machine in its class to run.

This is an in-line colour laser printer, so it's quite a bit deeper than it is wide. The control panel is a simple affair with a two line by 16 character backlit LCD and eight control buttons, six of which are used to work the menu system. At the back are sockets for USB 2.0 and Ethernet, the two interfaces provided as standard.

Kyocera Mita has a reputation for producing mono laser printers with a very low cost of ownership. It also produces colour machines though and the FS-C5015N is one of its latest small workgroup machines, designed for business. The Kyocera Mita website actually says the machine is not intended for graphics professionals, but then most graphics professionals would go for an ink-jet anyway.

This is a personal laser printer which can print duplex pages (both sides of the paper as a single job). It's an evolutionary product, developed from the FS-1020D, but with several notable improvements. For a start, it's a bit smaller, mainly in height. The case, designed by FA Porsche, still has its trademark indent in the front, but in other ways it's pretty much a squashed cube...

The FS-C5030N is aimed at the workgroup market, but is sufficiently expandable to be able to take you from a small working unit to a substantial department, simply by adding extra resources, such as paper trays. Although the asking price may appear high, it's this flexibility, combined with substantially lower running costs than those of cheaper colour lasers, which make it attractive. Print quality and speed are bonuses in this equation and overall it represents a very cost-effective package.

The FS-820 is a new departure for Kyocera and lends support to the company's argument that its printers are a lot cheaper to run than its main rivals. With an asking price of under £150, you don't pay for the savings in the initial purchase cost, either. Our only real query is the print quality of black text, but the over-heavy toner placement may reduce with use.
