"Lite-On are one of the clear players in the ROM market thanks to a massive array of drives that span from DVD to Blu-ray, internal to external and everything else that matters when it comes to buying a ROM drive. We don't look at heaps of ROM drives here at TweakTown, but every once in a while a new one will make its way into the labs and we'll figure out if it's going to replace what we currently have.
Today we'll be checking out the iHES208. Aside from playing DVDs, it manages to also handle Blu-rays, making it an option for home theater PC users. You don't just need a HTPC to make use of this drive, though. Maybe you've got a large screen on your main PC and you enjoy some high def goodness as much as the person with a $3,000 TV in the lounge."

I have to admit that when I received the eSAU108 External DVD Drive from Lite-On, I wondered, "do people still have a use for these?" - Most laptops these days carry with them a ROM drive and as for using one with a standard PC, it just seems silly. If there wasn't a market for the device, though, we would like to think Lite-On wouldn't have created one. But since they have, I'm sure that they first did their research and discovered that there are people out there who want one. So today we're going to take the time to have a look at an external DVD Drive from Lite-On with the model number eSAU108.

If you want a portable drive that enables you to watch Blu-Ray movies and read Blu-Ray media in general, the DX-401S is an attractive drive that does the job brilliantly. And the fact that you can connect it to any PC any time makes it extremely practical. It looks great, performs well (data transfer rates are consistent), and is virtually silent while reading any kind of disc.

No matter what you want to backup - important or personal data from a digital still camera, digital video camcorder, TV and so on - the Lite-on DH-4B1S is a good choice for recording large volumes of DVD and high-definition audio and video. Its fast Blu-ray disc/DVD writing and rewriting functionality should also meet the needs of the most demanding Blu-ray DVD title creating and multimedia applications on PCs, and support for all the popular legacy formats makes it a practical choice. The only disappointment is lack of Dual-Layer (DL) Blu-ray support, allowing you to burn up to 50GB of data.

Lite-On Corporation has been in the optical drive business since 1999 and makes many of the products that OEM system builders use in their computers. But they also sell products in the consumer retail market which are typically priced in the lower end of the scale compared with some of the equivalent models from other major brands. For this reason they're a popular choice for many home builders as well.

Today we get a look at our second Blu-ray ROM drive to hit our labs, and this time it is from Philips & Lite-On Digital Solutions Corp based out of Taiwan. It actually came to us straight off the factory production line and we are excited to bring you the first review of the product. The first drive we tested was an internal SATA Blu-ray burner as we mentioned just before from ASUS, and while it was cheaper than standalone players, it still had a pretty high asking price. Today we get down and dirty with the Lite-On DX-401S 4X Blu-ray ROM drive which connects to your Windows XP SP2 or Windows Vista based computer via a spare USB 2.0 port. It is essentially a Lite-On DH-4O1S internal SATA Blu-ray ROM placed inside a stylish black and white plastic box with USB 2.0 port and external AC power supply.

Lite-On DH-401S is a very capable reader and performed reliably throughout our tests. Reading speeds are fairly good and well up to standard for this type of drive. The Lite-On DH-401S also has some neat features. The ability to read Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3) games is a very useful feature to have. The DH-401S is also able to do Disc Quality Scanning on Blu-ray media, as well as scan DVD and CD media. This should make the drive appealing to members of CDFreaks, who like to test their burned media.

Those looking for an external optical storage device that is not only fast and versatile but doesn't break the bank, the DX-20A3P should be near the top of your list. Having said that, you should be aware that Lite-On's identically-specified DX-20A4PU (£49) sports an EZ-DUB system allowing one touch duplication of discs and files. Two touch-sensitive buttons on the top of the drive bypass the need to use computer-based software to accomplish disc and file copying. The 'DUB' button allows one-touch duplication of complete discs, while the 'FILE' button copies files from a PC to optical disc. Though it won't replace software for more complicated tasks, it does provide quick operation.

With all of this ballyhoo about HD-DVD-this and Blu-Ray-that, it's easy to forget that regular old DVDs and even our old faithful CDs are still quite posh. Not only is your box nearly unusable without some sort of compact disc reader for software, but most forms of entertainment such as movies and music still sells predominantly on these "old" formats of DVD and CD.

We have taken a hard look at this drive and have run quite a number of tests resulting in an overwhelming amount of data, and now it is time to put it to words. So what is this drive really? For starters, this drive lives up to its name as being a Super All Write drive capable of burning multiple types of media along with being equipped with quite a few interesting features. Beyond the features, this drive is capable of writing data at blistering speeds while maintaining accuracy and quality. In my book, it doesn't get much better than this. Lite On's LH-20A1L06C Super All Write drive performs as intended and does so at a low cost.

The SSM-85H5SX (£57.44 ex. VAT) is Lite-On's latest slim external DVD rewriter. The unit is a streamlined Super AllWrite drive, being both extremely portable and capable of reading, writing and re-writing any CD/DVD disc format on the market, including DVD-RAM. Furthermore, the SSM-85H5SX is equipped with LightScribe technology for burning labels directly onto the surface of a CD or DVD. In fact, the only feature the SSM-85H5SX doesn't support is reading and writing to next-generation DVD formats (Blu-Ray and HD-DVD).

The Lite-On LH-20A1H really is a Super All Write as it comes packed with features. Not only is this drive the fastest on the market by supporting 20X DVD±Rs, Lite-On has made is possible to take regular media and either have them finish their writing process faster or do so with fewer mistakes.

The SH-16A7S replaces the large bulky 40-pin flat IDE ribbon with a slim SATA cable and this small but important change helps put Lite-On above the rest of its competitors. IDE is slowly disappearing and the way of the future is SATA, not only because it's faster, but because cable managers will love its flexibility and ease of re-configurability.
