The Vantec SuperSpeed USB 3.0 card is definitely fast. It can supply enough bandwidth for SATA hard drives to work at their full potential, and works much better than the chipsets on many motherboards. While testing USB flash sticks in our test labs, we have discovered that the quality of the chipset on the motherboard greatly affects the USB throughput. Even if you don't need the extra bandwidth right now, the NEC D720200F1 chip on the SuperSpeed card provided the best performance we have seen on all of our existing USB 2.0 devices. So if you think you're not getting the most out of your USB devices, then it's probably your motherboard's USB chipset and you may want to upgrade to the new technology.

USB 3.0 has slowly been gaining market share over the last months. Vantec is one of the first companies to offer a USB 3.0 compatible external 3.5" enclosure. We take the NexStar 3 for a spin to see if the USB 3 promise holds up to the test.

"Many years ago it was quite common to find notebook computers sporting PCMCIA cards. If you wanted to add a Token Ring, Ethernet or Modem to your laptop, you had to buy a PC Card that plugged into one of the available slots in the side of the chassis. Even after these devices began to become integrated, there would be new technologies emerge that required purchasing an add-in card, although the need for such expandability slowly waned as USB became the popular choice for external peripherals. With the advent of SSD technology and eSATA interfaces, it has become easy to saturate a measly 60MB/s USB 2.0 connection. Obviously a faster method of transfer is needed and USB 3.0 just hasn't materialized as quickly as we hoped. Thus for review today we have the Vantec Dual eSATA ExpressCard."

"Just before CES we were made aware of an incoming package from Vantec. Instead of bogging us down with a sit down meeting where we could go over performance graphs, pie charts and a bunch of nonsense that you guys wouldn?t want to read even if you were stuck at your in-laws all weekend, Vantec has done us all a favor and just shipped over their latest products. In our package we received a PCIe USB 3.0 controller card (PN: UGT-PC302) and the latest prototype of the soon to be released NexStar 3 SuperSpeed (PN: NST-280S3-BK). The USB 3.0 PCIe Host Controller is a two port device that is so small that it may just fit GIGABYTE?s X58A-UD7 with the massive heat sink installed. The Vantec NexStar 3 SuperSpeed appears more like a retail unit than a prototype. The only thing that gives it away is the white box that it was shipped in. Everything inside of the box appears to be ready to go, so I don?t think we will have to wait too long for retail availability."

"They say, no one likes a know-it-all, but what about a do-it-all? - As enthusiasts we have a lot of toys and many of these devices store data on different forms of flash media. To add insult to injury, the people around us tend to think we are their personal tier one tech support and expect us to be able to work with all of their devices as well. All of that connectivity can be a pain in the bum if you are trying to carry separate adapters. I really couldn?t believe that it was possible to get a single device that has the ability to connect to 66 different types of media. I mean come on, 66? that is SIXTY-SIX! I had no idea that there were even 66 different types of storage mediums in use today or at least new enough that anyone would want to still use them."

"Today for review I?ve got the Vantec NexStar Universal Storage Adapter, it?s a long name but it can do quite a bit. This product will allow you to access both SATA and IDE 2.5? and 3.5? drives along with 5.25? SATA and IDE Optical drives and even 66 types of memory cards, so it does live up to it?s name of being a universal adapter. "

?Vantec is well known for its NexStar line of hard drive enclosures and we've reviewed quite a few of them, along with their other product lines, here on VH over the years with favorable results. Vantec recently took their basic hard drive enclosure to another level by offering a secured model called the "Vault". This is a password protected setup that basically splits your hard drive 50/50 with one side being public (unsecured) and the other side being private (secured) and it does it all automatically. Let's see how Vantec's Vault get this accomplished.?
