ECS AMD690GM-M2 is a socket AM2 motherboard with on-board video based on the latest chipset from AMD/ATI, AMD 690G, also known by its codename RS690. This is the first chipset coming from the collaboration between AMD and ATI, after AMD bought ATI. We were very curious to compare its performance to the previous on-board video solution from ATI, Radeon Xpress 1100, to its main competitors, GeForce 6100 and GeForce 7025 from nVidia, and also to cheap add-in video cards, like GeForce 6200. Let's take a look on the performance and features of ECS AMD690GM-M2.

f you're a novice at computer hardware, you may want to have a more experienced friend handy when setting up the ECS AMD690GM-M2 motherboard. This MicroATX board is not as user friendly as we'd like it, but then again with a price point of ~$70 CDN you really can't complain. The Hardware Installation Guide while brief is pretty detailed and the User's Guide is also very well written. From hardware installation to BIOS and driver setup, ECS has this part of its game pretty well down.

With a retail price of $71 CDN ($65 USD, 32 GBP), you really can't go wrong with the ECS AMD690GM-M2 motherboard. Based around the AMD 690G chipset, the motherboard is compatible with all Socket AM2 processors and with the recent price drops, you can potentially build a dual core workstation or multimedia machine for less than $500 CDN!

Today we are looking at one of the first culminations from ATI/AMD. While some of the older chips have been renamed, today-s contender is the first to be made since the merger occurred last year. Named the AMD 690 chipset series, it carries some new features. ECS have kindly sent us the first sample to us ahead of launch at the end of this month. It-s based on the AMD 690G chipset and comes with embedded ATI Radeon X1250 graphics with support for all Socket AM2 processors.
