While Asus have enjoyed success, they have not stood still, they have been diversifying into more PC components and peripherals. Today they produce everything; from servers, notebooks and cellular phones to routers, monitors and computer cases. If Asus could make their own processors and hard disk drives, they could offer a home PC exclusively made by them! Histrionics aside today we will be looking at a high end CPU cooler from them, the Arctic Square. Although Asus currently produces 10 high end CPU coolers, each of them has different potential and performance. The Arctic Square for example is marketed as a high end cooler balanced between thermal and acoustic performance, which in theory means that good thermal performance is only part of the picture; it should be able to keep noise levels to a minimum as well.

The new Asus Arctic Square heatsink Frostytech is testing out for you today consists of an array of nickel plated aluminum fins wrapped around a 92 mm fan that is set within the body of the heatsink. It's a simple arrangement of fan and cooling fins, but one that draws cool air into the heatsink and expels warmed air out the other side. Noise never becomes much of an issue with this heatsink because the fan impeller does not rotate more than 2300RPM.

If you take a look at Asus' website, you may notice one very interesting observation: They make, like, everything. Right off my head, I can already check off motherboards, graphics cards, cases, PDAs, laptops, optical drives, networking products... what's next, a sound card (Oh wait, remember the Xonar D2 and D2X at CeBIT earlier this year)? Anyway, when it comes to thermal solutions and component cooling, Asus probably isn't the first thing that comes to mind. Roughly two weeks ago, Asus contacted me and asked me if I wanted to take a look at their latest CPU cooling solution -- the Asus Arctic Square. I am always enthusiastic to try new things, but I must confess, right at that moment... I vaguely remember thinking that, in straightforward terms -- it'll probably be a disappointment (Sorry, I was just being honest!). But after going through some testing, I discovered that my initial thoughts regarding Asus' Arctic Square is quite far from the truth. And let me tell you why.
