ASUS launched it Republic of Gamers line of motherboards a while ago with the initial offerings of the Striker Extreme and Crosshair motherboards. While these motherboards did have a lot of features they were a bit lacking. Their third offering the Commando is based on the Intel P965 chipset, which is known to be highly overclockable. The Commando features the P956 as well as the LCD poster, onboard switches, support for 45nm processors and the SupremeFX audio card. With all these features it sure seems like ASUS has gone in the right direction with the Commando. Read on to see what the Commando has in store for us!

From a features point of view, the ASUS Commando motherboard is more board than many boards on the market. The inclusion of GRAW and 3DMark06 on a motherboard bundle is unique to ASUS's Republic of Gamer's line of motherboards. From a performance point of view, the P965 based Commando is faster than the competition in terms of speed.

In all the Commando is a well-priced and solid motherboard with fantastic overclocking potential. Even if it doesn't provide everything you'd ever wish for from overclocking, the board's fantastic stability will more than make up for it. It's feature rich and, while it's a Republic of Gamers motherboard, it negates some of the novel extras in order to make the price more attractive. If you're looking for a solid and very overclockable board, but don't require multi-GPU support, you can't go far wrong with the Asus Commando. Whether or not it's the best P965 board out there for your own needs will come down to personal preference, though.

The COMMANDO motherboard is the newest recruit (Ed. stop with the military references!) to the ASUS Republic Of Gamers line-up and it's a welcome addition to the squad. The layout is excellent and the BIOS - from tweaking to overall range of options - is definitely the best we've seen from an ASUS motherboard thus far.

One of the interesting things on the RoG series of boards is the ASUS LCD poster- ASUS basically places an LCD screen on the back panel that tells you of any problem with the setup. Think of it as an evolution to diagnostic LEDs found on other boards- instead of providing you a code that you need to look up, you're provided with the error message. Its a good idea, however, the placement on the back panel is less than ideal.

We have seen that with the right combination of overclocking options and motherboard features that the P965 chipset is a power house. ASUS has already done pretty well with the P5B-E Plus we looked at last time; however, this was just a patch board for the Commando to arrive. Commando is the third board to come out in the "Republic of Gamers" series of boards, joining the Striker Extreme and the Crosshair boards. Based on the Intel P965 chipset it looks to have the goods, but how does it stack up and is it really worth the high price tag of over $300 USD?
