Gigabyte is a solid company. They're at the top of my list, it would seem, so picking a current-generation entry-level motherboard without integrated graphics narrows things down to about half a dozen options, with the GA-P31-DS3L at the front. But is that really enough to base a decision on? Well, if you're reading this, then Jesus, of course not. Here's what to expect: OK performance, dull layout, and Ultra Durability! After a trip to the bench, this board indeed gets a nod for being better than the other P31 motherboards. Here's what that means.

There are few P31-based motherboards on the market, but as we find out, they are well-deserving of some attention. The board we are taking a look at today hovers around $100, but despite it's value status, it's a great offering.

The Gigabyte GA-P31-DS3L supports Intel Core 2 Duo/Quad/Extreme processors on a 800/1066/1333 MHz FSB, a max of 4GB DDR2 800/667, and one PCI Express x16 videocard. Integrated items include Gigabit networking, 7.1 channel High Definition audio, one IDE and floppy connector, four SATA, four USB 2.0 ports at rear, and optical/SPDIF audio output. In the box it's nothing the bare basics.

Intel has two chipsets in the P3x family, the Intel P35 Express and the P31 Express. The P35 Express is designed for higher performance platforms, with support for DDR2 or DDR3 memory and the ICH9 series Southbridge. The P31 being tailored for budget systems, only supports DDR2 memory and features Intel's older ICH7 series Southbridge. However the P31 has one major advantage price. Today I'll be reviewing Gigabyte's GA-P31-DS3L platform based on the Intel P31 chipset. Let's dig in and see how this board stacks up.

Earlier this week David Lin reviewed the Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3S and on the review bench today we have the GA-P31-DS3L from Gigabyte. This P31 motherboard supports Intel's Core 2 45nm processors, DDR2-1066 memory, all-solid capacitors, and many of the other innovations found on the GA-P35-DS3S. Nevertheless, is the GA-P31-DS3L that currently sells for about $75 USD able to perform well under Linux like the GA-P35-DS3S?
