Cooler Master have made some bold claims about their new Z600 cooler. We put the Z600 to the test to find out if it can really live up to the hype.

I have reviewed a large number of heat sinks during the time that I have been reviewing computer hardware. Yet I have never reviewed one that tipped the scales as far as this one did. Don't get me wrong, I'm not necessarily saying large is bad because the Cooler Master Hyper Z600R will also rank as one of the best heat sinks we have ever reviewed. So come on along as see what we learned.

Today we are looking at their mammoth Hyper Z600, a Passive capable CPU cooler that weighs over a kilogram(!) and towers over 6? high. While my motherboard sweats nervously in a corner, at the thought of supporting this giant cooler, let?s take a look at the product packaging.

At Cebit earlier this year Cooler Master were displaying their new range of CPU coolers, however they were not quite ready for retail availability. That changed in May with the release of the Hyper Z600, a large but very stylish item which is designed to operate silently or in single and dual fan configurations. Today we will be running the Z600 through a number of tests using Intels X9770 CPU to establish just how good Cooler Masters new product is.

The Coolermaster Hyper Z600 heatsink is a novel passive CPU heatsink for today's dual core processors. Its' 'star' shape, widely spaced aluminum fins and prodigious number of silvery copper heatpipes allow it to work without the benefit of a fan, albeit within specific thermal limits. As far as passive cooling goes (and I mean true passive cooling without any fan blowing toward it) Frostytech threw caution to the wind and stressed the Coolermaster Hyper Z600 heatsink in its passive mode.
