This will be my first Noctua cooler. It was originally designed for AM2+ and LGA775, but Noctua has designed a kit to convert any of their coolers for use on LGA1366 processors, and provided one along with the cooler. They have now come up with a special edition of this cooler containing mounting hardware for only the LGA 1366. Will the NH-U12P keep the i7 nice and cool? Read on to see!

As a serious High-End product, the NH-U12P effectively combines charismatic appearance with advanced technical design. It's an impressive cooler indeed - its working medium comprises a copper heat sink (45x42x5 mm), four 6mm copper heat pipes, a stack of large aluminum fins, and a 1300rpm fan.

Noctua has always fascinated me with their cooling solutions. They take the concept of product refinement to a new level, and often times simply tweak key areas of an existing design rather than reinventing the wheel. A perfect example of their research and development is found in the NH-U12P CPU cooler. This new product replaces their older NH-U12F model, and now features a NF-P12 cooling fan. Through the use of four heat-pipe rods configured in a "U" design, the NH-U12P borrows from the well-established performance record of many top-level coolers. Additionally, Noctua emphasises the complete experience beyond simply cooling the processor, and optimizes their products to operate with very low noise levels.

The NH-U12P is the newer version of the NH-U12. It has the same basic features as the NH-U12F, but is paired with the new Noctua NF-P12 120mm fan. The Noctua NH-U12P has shown that it preforms better than its older brother, the Noctua NH-U12F.

Noctua have a justified reputation of silent, yet powerful cooling. Partnering with the Austrian Institute of Heat Transmission and Fan Technology(!) allows some serious science behind their products, and as seen in the performance of their NT-H1 thermal paste we reviewed recently it seems to work. So it is with piqued interest that I will be looking at their 120mm-fan based cooler; the NH-U12P.

Noctua has gone and improved on an old favorite. The U12P offers some improvements that were most needed over its predecessor, the NH-U12. These improvements range from better performance to easier mounting. And if that isn't enough how about a better fan included in the package. If you can recall, the original cooler was a big hit with enthusiasts all over. With these tweaks who knows what the future has for those of us wanting it all from the newest CPU. All its splendor aside, it's a fantastic performer. It's easily the best, most capable cooler to cross this test bench. While it carries over the commonly seen tower design, the performance will easily be the deciding factor for the user who literally wants nothing but the coolest CPU possible. The Noctua NH-U12P is a great performer, it's cool, it's recommended, and it's my current top choice of CPU coolers.

All things considered, Noctua's NH-U12P performed admirably well. The cooler's design and build quality are excellent. In terms of compatibility issues, there were none - the cooler has ample clearance from memory and other components. Also, it can be rotated and thus can be installed in two different orientations. The only clearance issue that might arise is due to its height as it may interfere with some cramped cases. Installation was very easy except for the fact that it requires motherboard removal. Performance is top notch and it is easy on the ears thanks to the quiet NF-P12.

The cooling performance of the Noctua NH-U12P Heatpipe CPU Cooler is exceptional. With the fan at full speed it produces minimal noise and provides excellent thermal results, and cutting the fan speed down to near silence doesn't impact the cooling at all. Even though the performance was exceptional, achieving it took more effort than I am used to needing in order to install a CPU cooler.

On the heels of the successful NH-U12F CPU heatsink, Noctua has released a newer, more compatible version called the NH-U12P. This version has more clearance below the fins, making it easier to install on many motherboards. It comes with the new, ultra-quiet NF-P12 fan and a tube of the new NT-H1 thermal compound.
