Along with a couple of mid-range models based on Intel P35 chipset MSI has provided us with a Platinum-version based on the renewed platform. As is usual during initial release stage this particular motherboard was a pre-sale sample. Later, after the testing of the newly-released chipset had been done, the selling version, based on PCB revision 1.2, has made its way into our lab. However, the new revision wasn't any different in terms of appearance and functionality, therefore let's think that MSI engineers had worked on improving layout of power supply and signal lines.

MSI has added its Platinum treatment to a Intel P35 DDR2-based board that features a rollercoaster heatpipe. Is it all thrills and no spills?

The first thing that strikes you about the P35 Platinum is the funky heatpipe design that cools the Northbridge and Southdridge as well as the MOSFETs. We can say that it works really well as the heatpipes were barely warm even when overclocked, however, the bad thing is that you'll be hardpressed to install CPU HSF units other than the tock one provided by Intel. We could not get one of our PCZ HSF units to install on this board. Also, the heatsink on the Southbridge is quite tall and our 8800GTX card didnt like that too much- we had to move it a bit to make sure it was fitted in properly.

The MSI P35 Platinum motherboard overclocks pretty well (to 408 MHz), even though it does not have CPU clock multiplier adjustments in the BIOS. The new Intel P35 Express platform looks to be an excellent overclocker. We're excited to see what kind of results will be possible with a 1333MHZ FSB processor... Don't forget to check out the maximum motherboard overclocking chart at the end! :D

P35 Platinum from MSI - which is also known as MS-7345 - is based on the latest Intel mainstream chipset, P35. This motherboard, however, does not have DDR3 sockets but on the other hand it has a big rollercoaster-shaped passive cooling solution, two eSATA ports, two x16 PCI Express slots and several other extra features. Let's see the features and performance from his new release from MSI.

The feature set is solid, it looks great and offers enough to keep the majority of people interested. The box could offer a few more extras like additional USB ports and the board's eSATA solution is inferior to Gigabyte's optional bracket. However, if you're a fan of quiet computing and want something rock solid stable with an enthusiast friendly BIOS, superb overclocking and a not too stressing price, then the MSI P35 Platinum should definitely be one to consider.

The Intel P35 has seen a pretty quiet launch with retail boards already in store shelves. The MSI P35 Platinum is one of the few early products to hit the market that will still be based on DDR2 memory, but MSI does manage to implement some interesting ideas and bag themselves a winner.

Now motherboards based on Intel's P35 chipset are hitting shop shelves in Taiwan and other places around the world, we are able to start testing and providing reviews. Today we have been given the first of what we hope to be many retail boards based on the Bearlake P35 chipset. It is set to replace the Intel P965 chip as the mid-range monster with some updated features and specs such as support for upcoming 45nm Wolfdale and Yorkfield processors, PCI Express 2.0, updated ICH9 Southbridge as well as support for DDR-3 memory.
