We recently retested the ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT with a slew of new DirectX 9 and DirectX 10 games and of course, new drivers! We also threw the new NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT into the mix. Unfortunately for ATI, the new NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT totally blew away the Radeon HD 2900 XT.

All week we have talked about the performance of the 8.41 display driver and the performance on various ATI graphics cards from the R300 series to the latest R600 graphics card. In some of these articles, we have briefly commented on the image quality, but in this article we will be looking exclusively at the image quality while gaming with the ATI Radeon HD 2900XT 512MB under Linux.

At last, that is the least you can say about the Radeon HD 2000 series. It took AMD, the former ATI quite some time to get the two companies together and back on track, but they have done it. We expected it much sooner, and with high expectations and those are a bit disappointing. The new high-end Radeon HD 2900 XT accelerator from ATI has been released and widely available.

PowerColor has a nice card here, though it is outperformed by some of the high-end NVIDIA graphics cards. However, ATI fans looking for the fastest product ATI has right now, the PowerColor HD 2900 XT is it. The PowerColor HD 2900 XT shares the same feature set as the ATI HD 2900 XT that we tested previously. The core frequency is 740MHz, and the memory clock is 1650MHz. The same 80nm fabrication process is used and what we see here is the same exact ATI HD 2900 XT that I reviewed previously with some PowerColor stickers and different packaging.

The new ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT is finally here in the Tech ARP labs! ATI's top dog is now ready to battle it out with NVIDIA's own DirectX 10 graphics card. Let's put it through the paces in Windows Vista and see how well it does against the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX and the GeForce 8600 GTS. We will also see how it performs in DirectX 10 rendering. I like the Radeon HD 2900 XT, I really do. The underlying technology inherent in this card shows that the engineers at AMD are still working overtime to create efficient and effective 3D hardware, rather than just going for the brute force approach. However, when you consider that a GeForce 8800 GTS will cost you considerably less and give you very similar performance, it's hard to recommend this latest Radeon. All I hope is that once the launch frenzy is over, the price will drop in line with nVidia's part, and then the choice between the two will be far tougher.

The long awaited challenger to NVIDIA's hegemony of DirectX 10 graphics has appeared. ATI's R600 makes its debut in the form of the Radeon HD 2900 XT 512MB and to our surprise, goes for the jugular of the GeForce 8800 GTS, and not the GeForce 8800 GTX - though it comes close.

Things to say could be a lot, we can't only make a brief valuation of the product because there are a lot of aspects to consider. Let's start with the price: the Jetway Radeon HD 2900 XT will be commercialized in Italy with a price around 400?, in line with others producers. For that price the direct concurrent is the Nvidia 8800GTS 640MB. Both are DirectX10-compatible, changes the quantity of ram (superior on Nvidia), but the bandwidth is superior on the 2900. The AMD proposal is more oriented to new multimedia platforms, like the HD format with the hardware compatibility to Blue Ray and HD DVD Readers. There's only one problem: when will really be available HD DVD and Blue Ray contents and readers?

Contrary to what you may believe, the HD 2900XT that we are looking at here today is not meant to compete against NVIDIA's 8800 Ultra or even the GTX. Instead AMD aimed at a lower price target, the 8800 GTS. With a launch price of $399 AMD intends to take the mid/high end market segment instead of going after the faster 8800 GTX and Ultra. As much as they want to sugar coat it, the R600 in its current iteration is just not capable of getting the clock speed up to the level needed to go toe to toe with the GTX/Ultra in every situation...

Today we'll see how the newest RADEON HD 2900 XT (R600) graphics cards perform in game benchmarks. We conducted two test sets: a complete one under Windows XP and a brief one under Windows Vista. Note that we have also obtained test results for the 2900 XT overclocked to 850/2000 MHz.
