It?s hard to justify spending over $500 just to get a single game like Crysis to run. However, that?s just what we?ve been doing over the last while as NVIDIA pretty much had the run of the market place, pushing out GPUs at unheard of price points, punishing gamers and their wallets. Then things changed in June this year as AMD released a new series of GPUs starting with their 4850. NVIDIA?s response? Cut prices like crazy and hope that people would ignore AMD. However, as benchmarks and reviews started showing up, it was clear that NVIDIA had more to worry about than just price points.

The HD 4850 is the card that has put AMD/ATI back on the graphics card map over the past month. While the HD 3850 and HD 3870 were both good cards, a constant line-up of NVIDIA cards along with price drops meant that the aging technology was having trouble keeping up with cards not only in a similar price bracket, but cheaper again. The latest HD 4850 to come into the labs is from GIGABYTE and before we get stuck into the performance side of things, we will have a look at the package and what's inside as well as the card itself. So, let's not ramble on anymore and just get stuck into it.

The card we are reviewing today is the Sapphire Radeon 4850 which is based on the the RV770 GPU with 512MB of GDDR3. This card is braced to take on the ever popular GeForce 9800 GTX . So our question is how will this new offering perform we check it with some of the post popular video games available.

Today we are taking a look at a ATI HD 4850 videocard from Visiontek. This card is a middle class card but I have seen stats that show this card should perform as well as many other high end cards on the market. We are going to put it against the Asus 9800GX2 Top and the Asus 3870 X2 videocard to see what type of performance we can expect from this 4850 from Visiontek.

The Sapphire Radeon HD 4850 retail box is black with red accents. This is the case it should be since ATI graphics are known to be red. Also, red and black are my favorite colors. While the box says it supports some stuff, there is no mention of Linux support even though AMD has said it wants its partners to include a penguin or other open sourcey stuff on the box. The Catalyst 8.6 drivers for Linux support this GPU and were released last month.

Sapphire has always offered the most influential ATI graphics products available, and the new Radeon HD 4850 is no different. Although it still uses GDDR3 clocked at 993 (1986 MHz DDR), unlike the 4870 version that is decked out with GDDR5, the Sapphire 100242L model offers 24x custom filter anti-aliasing (CFAA) on its 625 MHz 800-core RV770 GPU. Benchmark Reviews tests the Sapphire Radeon HD 4850 graphics card against the closest competition, and even compare CrossFireX performance in this performance review.

After successive generations of underperforming graphics processors, ATI looks to have hit a home run with the new Radeon HD 4800 series. With a solid price to performance ratio, the mainstream Radeon HD 4850 has already prompted NVIDIA to cut prices. We check out its outstanding value in this overview of the Radeon HD 4800 series.

AMD/ATI has released two new high-end graphics chips recently, Radeon HD 4870 and Radeon HD 4850, known by the codenames RV770 XT and RV770 PRO, respectively. As you can guess by the numbers, HD 4850 provides a lower performance compared to HD 4870. In this review we will benchmark HD 4850 from Sapphire and compare it to its main competitors from nVidia. Is this video card a good buy? Check it out.

Although its always nice to occupy the highest performance position, AMD knows very well that the mainstream sector is what sells a lot more. They surprised everyone with their 3850 card last year which performed decently for a mainstream product. Today, they're shaking the foundation one more time with the launch of the mid-ranged 4850 graphics card.

In an effort to remain competitive in the $200-$300 price bracket, ATI is launching yet another product from a brand new series which has been given the codename R700. The R700 will be better known as the Radeon HD 4000, and the first product from this new series that we will be looking at is called the Radeon HD 4850. Already the Radeon HD 4850 is shaping up to be a rather interesting product as its suggested retail price has been set at just $200, right between the GeForce 8800 GT and 8800 GTS 512. With that in mind we would normally expect this new card's performance to at least exceed that of the 8800 GT, however, looking at its specifications the Radeon HD 4850 appears as it will be capable of much more than just defeating the competition's budget king.

The past 24 hours has been nothing but a blur of testing, but we wanted to get this review out to you as soon as possible. The ATI Radeon HD 4850 and GeForce 9800 GTX+ raise the bar for graphics cards and perform better than one would expect for a $199-$229 product. Enthusiasts and gamers better start saving some money up because you'll want one of these before summer is over....
