The Samsung SPP-2040 Photo Printer being put through its paces in this PCSTATS review prints 4"x6" glossy photo's via the dye sublimation process directly from any of six common flash media formats, incorporates a folding 2" colour LCD screen for previewing images, and can connect directly to PictBridge-enabled digital cameras. The Samsung SPP-2040 will print a colour 4"x6" image in about 70 seconds or less at 300x300dpi, and it allows some simple image manipulation without the need for a computer...

Printing at home does have its advantages over printing from a lab, but those advantages come with a cost, the SPP-2040 itself retails for around 200 Canadian Dollars, while less than other printers on the market it's not exactly budget friendly - and even more so when the consumables are added. In comparison to lab prints, the SPP-2040 put up quite a fight; easily crushing Kinkos, but slightly behind Blacks. Ever since the existence of photo printers, it was widely known that printing from home would cost significantly more per print than printing from a store, but for some the convenience is well worth the cost...

Print quality is very good with natural and accurate colours printed without dots. The dye sublimation technique means ink is transferred as a vapour from the backing film to the paper, so you get 'continuous tone' print, very similar to a classic, silver halide photograph. The printer lays three different colours onto the paper: yellow, magenta and cyan in that order, and then it lays a clear transparent layer over the top to protect the printer from light and ozone attack. The cover layer also gives the print an attractive, glossy coating. Even with only three-colour prints, black is well reproduced...
