With the introduction of HDMI pumping graphics cards, the motherboard market has jumped on the band wagon, with many featuring full HDMI output con audio. The abit AN-M2HD with it's GeForce 7050PV and nForce 630a chipset is one such example, but today I have AMD/ATI's reply; the Biostar TA690G AM2. As the name implies, this mATX motherboard uses the AMD 690G with onboard X1250 graphics. Both accept AM2 processors, both have 4 RAM slots and similar connectivity, but which is the choice of the media lover? Lets find out?

Biostar made quite some turbulence with its "T-Series" of motherboards. Accessible, but high-quality motherboards truly made a "boom" on the Intel platform. They also had a considerable reputation for their AMD-based boards, one of which we have under the scope this time - TA690G motherboard with an AM2 socket. MicroATX boards are generally hampered with a bad layout, but we can only congratulate Biostar engineers, since they did the best layout we have seen on a microATX board so far. With low price and great features, this tiny board proved to be great choice even for enthusiasts.

The stock performance I got out of the TA690G was certainly impressive. The 690G and SB600 leads to a budget multimedia machine or workstation without cutting any corners. This board should definitely be on your must-consider list for anyone tight on cash.

On the whole, this little motherboard comes with a lot of what you need to make a killer HTPC with the least possible investment. The Biostar TA690G AM2 has the all important HDMI output, the AMD 690G supports HDCP, and even an S-video TV-output is available. Talk about the multimedia options. The only caveat being that just one digital, and one analog option can be used and any time... so if you're hoping for concurrent DVI, Analog, HDMI, S-Video output you're not going to get that.
