Corsair is a traditional memory manufacturer they gained a lot of respect in the industry with their power supplies - we reviewed HX620W and TX750W and they are terrific products. But how the entry-level series from Corsair, dubbed VX, performs? Today we will take the most inexpensive power supply from Corsair, VX450W, and completely disassemble it and see if it can really deliver its labeled power.

The Corsair VX450W PSU arrived Technic3D. See you in the following Review from Technic3D the next PSU Review with a high efficiency and a good price. Make the Ultra-quiet 120mm double ball-bearing fan, 6 Serial ATA connectors and extra long cables support this PSU better than other PSUs?

The VX450W from Corsair touts itself as a low noise and high efficiency 450 watt power supply. Corsair claims the VX450W produces 21db of noise under all but the heaviest loads (not much more than the sound of a whisper at three feet away), and will remain over 80% efficiency over its entire range. They call the VX450W a rock solid performer and ideal solution for home theater PCs (HTPCs) and Energy Star PCs (we read this as mainstream and budget). Oh really? Well, we shall see about that.

Corsair's new VX450W power supply comes with a maximum load of 450W. While this may not sound much it is absolutely sufficient to power most of today's systems. The PSU has a very high efficiency of over 83% which allows the fan to run slower because there is not so much excess heat to get rid of. In our fan noise testing this extremely silent unit leads by a large margin over all other PSUs tested so far.

Looking over the specifications, the VX450W has just about everything we would expect from a PSU of this caliber, although there are some interesting aspects which should be noted here. The power supply's rated 85% efficiency is a great selling point, as the industry's focus on "green" power supplies has taken root with consumers.

Power supplies rated towards 1kW and beyond are overkill for the majority of users. What they want are reliable, efficient, quiet PSUs that are able to provide ample power to their systems without putting too much of a dent in their wallets. And that's what Corsair's promising with its VX450W, pitched at around £45. We check it out to see if it delivers what's needed.

The new Corsair VX450W power supply incorporates a single +12V power rail that is designed to deliver continuous power under heavy loads while keeping things simple inside the unit. On modern computers the +12V rail is the most important to pay attention to and the CMPSU-450VX has a dedicated solid single +12V rail of 33A (41A on VX550W)...
