Long gone are the days when OCZ were merely a memory manufacturer, today they produce some decent power supplies (after their acquisition of Pc power) and have a range of cooling products available including CPU coolers and thermal compounds. Today we are taking a look at two of the most recent additions to the OCZ cooling family, the Vendetta CPU cooler and Freeze thermal compound. We will be comparing both against the excellent Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro and MX-2 paste.

OCZ Technologies is no stranger to us here at HL. Over the past few years, we've covered OCZ's excellent system memory, flash media, and power supplies. As we saw at CES, OCZ is definitely not a company to rests on its laurels, releasing a plethora of new products. Today we'll take an up close and personal look at OCZ's newest cooling product, the OCZ Vendetta CPU Cooler. It is obvious with a quick glance that the Vendetta isn't your "run of the mill" cooler. While upon initial inspection it fits the mold of the average cooler, aluminum fins attached to copper heat pipes, flipping the OCZ Vendetta over reveals something unusual.

OCZ's broad market availability means you won't have a hard time tracking down the Vendetta heatsink in your neck of the woods. The Xigamtek HDT-S983 was a great heatsink, and the OCZ Vendetta cooler will certainly follow in its footsteps. The OCZ Vendetta heatsink FrostyTech is reviewing today is equipped with soft rubber vibration absorbing fan posts, and a 92mm PWM fan that spins at 1200-2800RPM, and some rather unique fin geometry.

OCZ would like to take us back to the good ole days with their new cooler, the Vendetta. If you had to put the Vendetta in a class it would definitely be a tower type. The Vendetta stands tall being supported by three heatpipes surrounded by plenty of aluminum fins. The Vendetta is not the top of the line cooler from OCZ but more in the middle. So I would venture to say it is gear to take on the middle range of coolers from other manufacturers. How tall will it stand in our test?

For the size, the OCZ Vendetta is exceptionally capable, providing you run the fan at full speed. If you're anything like us, that'll just drive you nuts, however it seems that some in our community have a greater tolerance to these things so it could suit them well. Using the included 4-pin connector on the fan works well, providing your motherboard has the facility to use it - although you can still swap it for any 92mm of choice and take the performance hit. However, does the cost of an extra 92mm fan on top of this heatsink simply equate to a bigger heatsink altogether? The attention to detail, like the rubber fan mounts and pitted fins, is excellent. In addition to its great build quality and because it's smaller than most heatsinks we've seen recently, it should easily fit more restrictive boards as well. It's a great replacement for the stock Intel heatsink but some might not be sure if it's worth £5 more than the Arctic Cooler Freezer 7 Pro which, at the same noise level, should perform fairly similarly to the Vendetta.

After our first review of such a cooler I was left wondering if this design development was really such a good idea, as performance was less than impressive. We're going to give direct touch heatpipe CPU coolers another shot, this time in the form of something from OCZ Technology. They have provided their Vendetta CPU cooler, which looks a good deal like the Kingwin Revolution cooler we reviewed just about a month ago.

What makes the Vendetta unique, is the fact it uses three copper heat pipes that each make direct contact with the processor to ensure the most rapid heat transfer. The 'V' shaped stacked aluminum cooling fins feature dimples that are supposed to add turbulences, thereby reducing the skin effect of laminar air flow. Basically, this CPU cooler was built to tackle heat-induced performance degradation and to solve the cooling challenges of today's enthusiast system builds...

As I mentioned earlier, the base is designed so that the three heatpipes will directly touch the CPU's heatspreader. I'm not a thermal engineer, but I do realize that there is some efficiency loss when transferring heat from one substrate to another, such as from the heatsink base to the heatpipes contained within.

In September OCZ Technology released two new processor coolers for the latest AMD and Intel processors: the Vanquisher and the Vendetta. Both are pretty compact and affordable coolers which should do a good job at keeping your processor cool. In this review I'm taking a closer look at the OCZ Vendetta HSF to see how good this heatsink cools. There's no reference on OCZ's website why they called this heatsink Vendetta but I think it could be an homage to "V for Vendetta", a pretty inspiring movie (and also a comic book series) about freedom which was released in 2006.

Many manufacturers search out designs that will help them develop a product known for extraordinary performance. Benchmark Reviews has already reviewed many of the very best CPU coolers available to enthusiasts, from the very unique and original design of the Zaward Sylphee ZCJ003 and VIVO to the oversized Thermaltake MaxOrb CL-P0369. Not long ago, we even reviewed the Ultra ULT33186 Chilltec TEC CPU cooler which combined three different cooling technologies into one solution. All of these products performed very well, but none of them really set itself apart from the pack like the Xigmatek HDT-S1283 did. In this review we will test the OCZ Vendetta (OCZTVEND) Exposed Copper Heatpipe Direct Touch CPU cooler against a field of well-established competitors.
