As of this date, this is the best iteration of combination camcorder/digital still camera I have tested. The quality of the MiniDV videos is very accurate, with nice contrast and lifelike colors. And the stills are the best yet but it must be pointed out, I have not tried the trio of 5MP camcorders available (we'll test them as soon as possible). The only negative is the fact the videos are tape-based not disc so you lose all of the benefits of DVD camcorders (thumb nails for each scene, jumping from point to point, simply popping it into your DVD player for playback and so on). You also have to worry about recording over scenes but a modicum of caution eliminates that potential disaster...Read more inside...

The Canon PowerShot SD550 is a welcomed addition to the Digital Elph line. It's sure to make an excellent choice for the family, business, or tourist user. Its compact size allows it to be carried almost anywhere, taking up about the same amount of space as a deck of playing cards. If you want a durable ultra-compact camera that produces outstanding photos and is a robust performer, the SD550 is definitely for you...

Canon's PIXMA iP90 is a good attempt at a more compact ink-jet that you can take with you. Little is sacrificed in terms of print quality and the speed of the machine is also good, given is small size. It's not that cheap to run, though and we would have liked to see more attention given to power provision. Carrying round a separate power supply - and possibly a separate external battery pack - doesn't make for a true Print 'n' Go life...

The five megapixel Canon PowerShot S2 IS allows consumers from the novice to the photo enthusiast the ability to capture high quality still images and movie clips. The image stabilized 12x optical zoom lens (36-432mm equivalent) makes tack-sharp long telephoto shooting positively practical. Despite its long range, the lens is ultra-compact and retracts securely into the camera when it is powered down. In addition, there are two levels of close-up shooting, Macro and Super Macro. Super Macro mode enables extreme close-up shooting to 0 cm from the end of lens barrel...

The print quality is excellent and the price is very competitive, two factors which should make the Laser Shot LBP5200 a good buy. Against this, though, is the inconvenience of having the paper tray open all the time, the high noise level when printing and the current scarcity of consumables. Canon will probably fix the last of these as time goes on, but you need to balance the rest before deciding if this printer's for you.

The A510 has nearly all of the features I like to see on a camera, including aperture priority, shutter priority and full manual exposure modes, manual focusing, spot metering, AA batteries and it even comes
with a digital zoom set to off as a default. Of course, it also has a full auto mode and a wide selection of scene modes and program modes. It also has a useful 4x optical zoom, equivalent to a 35-140mm zoom on a 35mm film camera. I would have liked a little more range at the lower end, but very few digital compact cameras go wider than 35mm, and some don't even do that.

The Pixma iP 8500 is intended for printing digital photographs and at this it is supremely good. Whether printing on A4, 10 x 15 or on CDs, photos come out superbly natural and detailed. It's also quick when printing photos, but don't duplex plain pages if you're in a rush. Running costs are relatively high, so you need to balance that against the output quality.

First, it stole the limelight at PMA 2005. Now it has reached our shores. Enter the successor of the EOS 300D - the EOS 350D Digital SLR. 8.0-megapixel, DIGIC II, 3 FPS shooting, are just a few of its improved features. Bundled with a 18 - 55mm 'kit lens', this is one worthy DSLR in its category.

The Selphy CP500 is about the size of a thick paperback, though there's a separate black power supply block and a cassette carrying the 6 x 4-inch postcard blanks, which clips in at the front. You also need to allow a space on your desk at the back of the printer, to accommodate each card as it's fed out during the printing process. Various other paper sizes, including credit card, are available, with separate cassettes and ink film cartridges for each.
