There's no denying that LightScribe is a superb feature and one that I would love to have in my PC. Unfortunately, the dvd640i is just too far behind the competition when it comes to performance, and my advice would be to wait for the next generation LightScribe compatible drive and get the best of both worlds...

High tech but easy to use, the HP R717 is capable of turning in some top-quality shots under ideal circumstances, and copes better than most with unusual lighting. Its relatively low price should make it a competitive choice in the high-end compact market.

Laser printers don't have the glamour they once had, but they're still the doyens of nearly all small businesses. As such a new mono laser for from HP is definitely worth a look. The main thing about he 'nw' variant of the LaserJet 1022 is that it has 802.11g wireless networking built in. This means anybody with a home or office wireless network can print to the 1022nw without any physical data connection...

As a beginners camera, the M417 has much to commend. It's cheap, well made, has a good if rather basic specification, and sports several technical innovations that will help the novice user to take better pictures. The Adaptive Lighting technology still needs a little work, but it can produce very good pictures in circumstances that would defeat a normal camera. Shame about the image quality though.

The concept of the Color LaserJet 2820 is good and the physical implementation is neat and effective. The print speed leaves a lot to be desired, though, the noises it makes are unpleasant and we were surprised to see a corruption in one of our print samples. Perhaps you're better off waiting for the second generation model.

Improvements in IT technology now filter down from top of the range to budget models in only a few months. Nowhere is this more obvious than with printers and All-in-One devices, where last year's cunning innovations are this year's mainstream features. Just to prove this point, HP has released the PSC 1610, a sub-£100 All-in-One aimed at the home user and digital photographer, which includes most of the goodies reserved last year for machines costing over twice as much.

So, hp's decision to equip its Pavilion zv5464EA with an Athlon 64 chip makes sense, since this is a machine designed to be an affordable, mobile entertainment centre rather than a weapon for the road warrior. The chip of choice is an Athlon 64 3400+ which will be more than powerful enough to make short work of anything you're likely to throw at it. The CPU is backed up by 512MB of PC2700 RAM and a 60GB hard disk. The nVidia GeForce 4 440 Go graphics chipset is probably the weakest link in the hardware chain, so although this is a machine aimed at entertainment, the latest 3D games won't be part of that brief.

Overall, we were very impressed with the HP LaserJet 2420dn's capabilities as a medium-duty office printer. It's lightning fast print speed and miniscule warm-up times are its best attribute, but print quality is also excellent. As you'd expect with HP, the 2420dn is not particularly cheap, but the operating costs are on par with other office laser printers once you've got it running.

The Photosmart m1260.uk isn't a conventional Media Center PC, but it is an interesting and attractive product. Features like the Personal Media Drive and Lightscribe DVD writer give this machine an edge over the competition. The lack of DVI on the graphics card and external infrared receiver are both disappointments, but the low price point helps make up for these. If you're looking for a workhorse PC that also features all the bells and whistles of Media Center, the m1260.uk is definitely worth a look.

The Color LaserJet 3550 is a fair colour laser printer at a good price. It's not that quick and, by default, its image quality can be bettered, but it's easy to maintain, well-designed and comes with good software. The networked 'n' version is a worthwhile upgrade for workgroup use.
